BMW Revises Recommended Oil Change Intervals to 10,000 Miles for 2014+ 3 and 4 Series
BIMMERPOST NEWS BMW Revises Recommended Oil Change Intervals to 10,000 Miles for 2014+ Models BMW has changed its long time recommended oil change mileage intervals for all 2014 models and beyond. The changes apply to all vehicles produced from July 2013 on. Previously, BMW recommended a 15,000 mile / 24 month Condition Based Service interval, but as of July 2013, the new basic interval will be every 10,000 miles / 12 months. This applies to both gasoline and diesel models. The Z4 roadster, M5/M6 and ActiveHybrids have some special recommendations, which you can see in the announcement and charts below. |

VERY interesting for the "did you really wait until 15k miles to change your oil" debate...

Revised oil change interval for July 2013+ build
I did a search to see if anyone posted anything on this, but didn't find anything.
I just found some information that BMW has revised their oil change interval and it includes the F30's. As you all know it was 15K miles or when the ECU would trigger an oil change interval per it's data gathering algorithms. Now, that interval has been lowered to 10K miles or when the ECU will trigger the interval based on revised algorithms. This is supposed to affect July 2013 and on builds. I have read a couple of posts by F30 owners who have taken their car in for it's 15k oil change interval, and after the oil change the information showing the next interval countdown showed 10k miles. Seems to indicate that there may be change in the software that gets added in with the oil change. Please post what you guys have been experiencing and if you know more about this change. Those of you who have a 7/2103 and later build, have you seen the next oil change showing 10k instead of 15k after the oil change? I'm bit under 10K and about 3 weeks away from having my 335i Msport for a year. So I'll be getting an oil change soon and will see if there is a change and the new count down starting at 10k. My build is 7/2012 so I don't expect the change. But then, I don't think there has been any mechanical change for 2013 cars other than new algorithms for when to trigger a change. Till then I'm interested in others experience with this and info. Last edited by RPM90; 08-04-2013 at 05:34 PM.. |

My 11/12 build 335 has just shy of 11k miles and is showing 7k remaining. I did my own change a while back, but it's always been aiming for about the 18k mark. Even before my change.

My build is 7/2013 and it doesn't look like BMW will change it, but I won't know until I go in for the first change. Even if pre 7/2013 builds stay on the 15k interval it doesn't bother me. BMW still warranties the car, and I know that full synthetic can handle it. For me it's not an issue. For others, they have to make their own decision. This reduction in miles does add an interesting point to the debate regarding those who think BMW chose 15k as a way to save money, and now factory oil changes will come sooner. I think this might have more to do with carbon build up around the valves, more so than the oil losing it's lubricating ability. Still, it does indicate that BMW NOW thinks 10k is more appropriate rather than 15k. |

as a matter of fact this is something I do not understand... I change engine oil every 5000-6000km ( we use km here), despite the recommendation from the factory, as I do notice a significant degrade of the engine oil itself.

How did you notice significant degradation of the engine oil? Used Oil Analysis? Can you post a report showing significant degradation at the BMW recommended oil change intervals?

OK. There is actually a guy on the BITOG oil forum that swears that's how he determines the condition of his oil. Don't think he uses a sommelier's tastevin; just takes a drip off the dipstick. Cretin. There is another guy who has a more scientific method: He heats a metal plate on his barby grill and then sprinkles a bit of the used oil on the plate and examines the residue, much like the old tribal shamans casting the bones and sprinkling with chicken blood to devine the portents. Who needs science.

I imagine that I'm in a fairly common category - just finished running in my 428i. Mostly I was gentle with it, but I allowed myself a few 6000rpm indulgences. According to the car, the oil level is still at 100%.

What's the deal with the hybrid models calling for transmission fluid changes every 30,000 miles?

Oil change
Will BMW guarantee an engine if the oil is only changed every 10,000 miles? Do they stand behind an engine replacement after say 150,000 miles if an owner uses their recommended interval?
After making the purchase, it seems like a small investment to make to perform oil/filter changes in the 6-7,000 mile range and avoid problems down the road. My first BMW (2011 328i) called for 15,000 oil change and I never bought into that long of an interval. Seem as though BMW now doesn't buy into it either as they reduced down to 10,000. I wonder if they were experiencing engine complaints from owners? |

Well I'm going to bump an old thread.
I recently picked up a 340i Xdrive that was about 11Km, as of last week it was showing 1200 km to Maintenance/Service then i turn it on today and it says Servive was due a month ago. I have not driven 1200km since the last service message. I'm taking it in for the service but why the mixed message? Last edited by BLACK HAWK DOWN; 02-02-2017 at 08:01 AM.. |

So my build date was 12/12. My system states every 15k/2yrs. I recently went to the get a yearly service (oil change and brake fluid) but asked them to correct the system to the new interval (10k/1yr). SA said my oil change wasn't due yet but to correct the system would require coding and the charge would be about $160 on top of the oil change.
Does this seem correct? I ended up denying the oil change and will do the job myself but I figured they would just throw in the new code for the updated interval if completed the oil change with them. |
