No Signal after software update

Hello!

I've had my F31 (2012 M Sport 320d) all of 1 day and decided to perform a 'Software Update' on the iDrive. It had rebooted a few times on the drive home when playing bluetooth audio and it sounded easy enough to do.

Found the BMW instructions, entered the VIN and followed the instructions.

Everything appeared to be working, progress bar finished then it switched off.

Now all the iDrive screen shows is 'No signal'. Have tried rebooting it by holding in the volume button but it returns to 'No signal'.

What went wrong? How can I fix it? Is there some way to reboot or re-install software with it in this state?

Hope someone can help.

Paul

Are you saying that you downloaded a new software version for the audio & Tel and then installed it via a thumb drive?

If so - the same update menu screen has an option that allows you to go back to the previous version. Try that and see what happens.

Hi Jim,

Correct.

Unfortunately I now can't use the screen at all so cannot access that (or any other) menu. All the screen shows is 'NO SIGNAL'.

No idea how it could have broken from performing what I thought was a simple update operation!

Any suggestions?

Many thanks

I just got the same problem. After updating software, which I downloaded from bmw site, I got black screen with text "No signal" and it wont go off. Im afraid that will take all of my car battery over night.

Please help!

i’ve solved problem but unfortunately on expensive way. I found guy who is very good at programing and he said that I’ve fuck*d up navigation so I needed to have a new one. He install new device and developed same one and now is good. That costed me 400€

Im still asking myself, how the hell that stupid update from bmw website could fucked up that much, and why do they have this on website if they know that can happened?! Im so pissed

Wow. Ok. Amazing that's even possible. I would have thought it should be possible to undo a software flash somehow.

Still, at least you have yours fixed now.

If you're still under warranty, I'd take it back to BMW and see what they can do. Most likely a software flash will fix the issue.

If you have an ENET cable, shoot me a PM and I'll see if I can recover the head unit through coding. If you're in the US or Canada, we can replace the head unit as well but it would be good idea to validate and see if that is necessary first.

That is the weak spot of an update and why companies release so few firmware updates.

When you are replacing the entire system, one misread 0 or 1 can brick the system in any electronic component.

It could easily be an error on your usb drive where a single bit was bad.

But in virtually any electronic component, a complete firmware update always bricks a few units. This happens anytime a cable provider or a satellite provider sends out new firmware to their boxes.

It’s also a reason most Android Smartphones almost never get updated to newer Android Versions. An yes, even Apple updates brick some iPhones every update.

It’s also why your istep version isn’t updated everytime you have service.

Indeed. I am familiar with flashing firmware on phones and other gadgets I just foolishly thought this time on my new car that technology might be a bit more mature by now!

But It should also be recoverable if only I know how to flash it and without the interface (and without breaking anything else!).

Either lots to learn or lots to spend at BMW.

There has to be an issue with the update if so many people are seeing it?

No. As noted 6 months ago, whenever any electronic device gets a firmware update a small number of them are usually bricked.

That, for example, is a reason why Samsung and other Android phone manufacturers seldom allow their devices to be updated to the latest Android firmware.

For those keeping track UPD09032.bin worked just fine with 2016 F36 NBT ID4.

My ‘18 F33 will not read my flash drive with 9032 on it. It will play video files off it. I grabbed a new flash drive and tried it again and it didn’t see it. So I just gave up.

Perhaps you already have the latest firmware? Check the PDF release notes, it will tell you what firmware release level you end up *before* and *after* updating on the various HU. On mine, I was on MB-001.044.001, etc. and ended up on MB-001-046-001, etc.
