Where did you have the cable made, and where did you mount the new USB port? Do you have pictures?

Older post, but wanted to say thanks for the great write-up. Did this today to my new (to me) F31 and these instructions were perfect.

Would this HSD cable connect to the remaing cable in the console after you remove the phone adapter and plug into the USB port available on realoem?

Inspired by this thread I decided to remove the phone cradle and utilise the space better.

I have an old iPod touch permanently plugged into my car so since I owed my car my arm rest has looked like this...

So I decided to remove the dock...

The blue connector, left in the car, is effectively a USB that needs an adaptor so I bought one of these...

It's not quite the right fit so you have just trim off a little sliver of plastic on the connector in the car. Then bingo, an extra USB socket. I then routed the iPod lead up to armrest and tucked the remaining wire neatly away.

I used some scrap plastic foamex I had lying around and created an inlay for my iPod then finally topped it off with the 'compartment matt' (51169227902).

The graphic on the iDrive even seems to fit too...

What all did you need from that eBay link?
What did you need to trim?

Yes, all I needed was the part purchased on eBay.

If you see this post earlier in the thread the connectors are slightly different dependant on colour. to make the blue connector fit in the green you just have to knife or with fine cutters take the bit of plastic off that stops you just pushing it on. It's just a little ridge of plastic.

If you have your ipod touch hooked up to its permeant mount and another phone hooked up to the other usb port do they interfere with each other?

No, they are separate usb connections to the head unit. If you look at the last picture, on my earlier post, of the idrive screen the original usb socket in the arm rest is the top one with nothing connected when the picture was taken

I did this today it was fairly easy, but this cable for some reason was the biggest pain in the ass to disconnect

Thanks so much for this amazing DIY. I did it today on my F87 M2 and it worked flawlessly. One difference I found is that there's only 2 wires to disconnect.

Finally got this done tonight. Still need some black foam, but used underlay for now! ?. Really happy with the mod as it frees up my other USB.

£25 all in. £10 adaptor from China and second hand try for £15??

Superb, nice job. I did actually link to a UK seller above for the adaptor but glad you sorted it.

Underlay actually looks like it does the job okay, I'd stick with that, It might be easier to remove the iPod to add music etc. I've been too clever/neat for my own good and removing mine requires a blade of some description. Although, tbf I've not actually taken it out since I put mine in.

This looks great - I'm am going to give it a go with my F30 as I can't really see a use for it.

This was such a good modification. Don't even know the iPod is there now and I've put a usb drive in with random media and films for the kids.
