Remap options 320ix 184bhp

Hi,

Wondering what options there are for 184bhp engine.

Car has done 101k miles so don't want to push it too much, car is already fairly quick, so might be mapped, but wondering what options would be to get a modest increase while staying safe.

Try MG Flasher. You can map the car from your phone. Plus you can put it back to stock at any time

your car isn't going to be mapped from the factory, and a 320 will be massively undertuned from the factory, so 40-50% power gains are advertised on bm3 website for b48.

My suggestion and what most people run is bm3, which is the most common ECU flash and you won't have any issues even with a stage 2 OTS flash

Hi,

It's the N20 engine and I want to have a safe tune. N20 has a higher compression and different pistons than the 328i N20.

There are maps available that offer 260bhp and 400NM from quantum who seem fairly reliable in the UK.

Seen a lot of threads of people blowing their engines, which I wouldn't fancy.

Any idea on realistic safe remaps numbers for the N20?

Thanks

I only have experise with bm3, but have heard mostly good things about other tunes. PTF advertises gains for 320i here and performance wise in that link

You can flash and you'll be golden. I broke 125k miles with my n20 the other day. No issues other than the previous owner previously doing the timing chain repair.

320i comes with the N20. N26 is the SULEV motor for the 328i

Sorry man, but that's not the case. N26 is the SULEV motor that is placed in cars within California and is required to meet SULEV standards. The N20 and N26 are identical, however, the N26 has higher compression and less boost from the factory to produce even fewer emissions, and is placed into the 320/328s. N26 has an 11:1 compression, N20 has 10:1. N20 is rated higher from the factory at ~248hp when the n26 is around ~180hp. In theory, the N20 should be able to handle more boost than the N26, however since both motors share the same rods and rod bolts, both of them are limited by torque to around 350-360wtq under 3500 rpm. Thus rod bolts are a minimum to replace if you seek 400whp +.

The real underlying condition is that it depends on your market on which motor you have +/- amongst all the models. Generally speaking after 2014 the motors are mostly N26s as BMW stopped producing the n20/n26 as much to slowly place the motor under the end of life, and roll out the b48.

At the end of the day, the easiest way to tell is to read the emissions sticker on the car, or get underneath it and check for an additional catalytic converter. The N20 only has a muffler and resonator underneath after the downpipe, the N26 has a muffler, resonator, and an additional catalytic converter.

Yeah the engines are generally the same but there are 328s with N20s they aren't all N26s. I know many people with 328s that have N20s. The 320i has a N20 and depending on where you live the 328i either has a N20 or N26. The pistons on the 328 are different and the tune is different but almost everything else is the same.

So one post above you state the 328i is n26 and the 320i is n20. Now you back track

Please stop confusing the people

Sqwinny, the information you are posting is wrong as well. The N20 engine exists in both the 20i and 28i, whereas the N26 only exists in the 28i platform. For those driving the 20i N20 it is a detuned version that runs high compression 11:1. For those driving 28i N20's and N26's they are both 10:1 low compression and use the exact same boost and produce the exact same HP. As you mentioned the N20/N26 share very much the same components except N26 has more and higher density CATs, extra HC filter and a few other components to be SULEV. The N26 is not able to sustain the same HP above 5500rpm due to restrictive CATs but on paper same documented performance.
You can review the N26 details here: https://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/at...9&d=1473767869

Want to chime in, grab BM3 and you're golden. Makes the car completely different and is faster than a stock 328. Stage 1 makes the car a nice daily. Stage 2 makes the car just barely slower than a 335i. Issues happen with pistons breaking on the 20i models with Stage 2, so keep that in mind. I've been stage 2 for 30k miles with zero issues
