I just checked on the BMW website for my VIN and it states that my software is up to date, but this software is for the connected drive system.

My 340i has the standard gauge cluster not the one shown above.
I have not had this happen to mine. But, it doesn't surprise me. Just about everything is computer controlled in a modern car like a BMW. And, it's probably operating on some Windoze based system. :O) So, not unexpected. Even the windows are not directly operated by the window switches anymore. In the past you pressed the electric window switch and you actually controlled the electrical contact to power the window motor. Now, the window switch is a mouse button push telling the cars computer that you want the window up or down and the OS then decides if it will allow it or not, or it might instead decide to turn the HVAC heat up another 10 degrees. SkyNet will attain consciousness in 5...4...3.... LOL! |

That site shows my car is "up to date", but I dropped off my car today for the one year service/oil change and the dealer shows it needs a recall software update. |

About an hour and a half later, tech brought my car out. SA informed me that the oil change was complete, but they were unable to reset the service indicator. They needed more time to diagnose the issue and fix it, and suspect that it may also be related to the gauge issue. So, I now have another appointment set up for Oct 7 since I may not be able to bring the car back in sooner.

Same happened to my 2016 435i on 9/30 when i get off a ramp at hwy 400/ 407 in north york Ontario. I pulled into a carpool lot , turned engine off then on, back to normal. Yes, i had my nav on before it went out. First i saw my hud went dark, then dash went crazy. But the engine still gave power when i stepped on gas. I had a obd2 "automatic" device that can check error code, nothing popped up. I had the car for a year, this is the first time, it was at 17800 km when it happened

My e90 has done this on several occasions. Now the thing has partially failed in that the cluster won't light up, the window switches won't work, the headlight switch is dead, and the hazards are dead. The turn signal also won't work, but curiously the BC button does. I my case the dash was out on my car twice when they replaced the AC evaporator and again when they fixed some problems caused by that repair so I suspect something got screwed up. The only fault that showed was the cluster not communicating with the radio. Unplugging the radio and plugging it back in fixed it the first time. The second time it miraculously fixed itself. This time who knows.
I will say that if you have an older car the cluster has a way of going nuts if your battery is on the way out. I doubt that would be the case in a 2016 though. |

My 2016 328 does that every time at this one particular fwy exit on my way to work. But only with navigation on, doesn't do that with navigation off. Mine only has 7000 miles, and automatic map update is on. Got a service appt this coming Monday. Yep yep.

It happened to me today. The second time!! First time is 9/30 this year. Both exiting a hwy ramp with nav route on. I had the car for a year, definitely not the first time i exiting a hwy with my nav on. I tried again earlier tonight. Different location but off a hwy. nothing happens. Both incidents were occurred out of town. Seem like only 2016 model are effected? Recall??

There was a discussion that I started in the 2 series forums too. I also only get this issue on one particular freeway exit with nav on. We are thinking that it's the inability of the cluster to draw the freeway exit intersection, causing the whole cluster to restart repeatedly until that you are away from that area.

Got my car back this morning, took the same exit with navigation on, didn't happen, so i guess it's fixed....
So the service rep told me they reset the system, did not mention update or patch. He did mentioned that there's a service bulletin on this issue but I couldn't find it online. Everything got reset, all my coding (windows down/up, mirror fold, and video via usb) gone. Ok, so below is what they put on the invoice. "Cause: Software error in navigation head unit S11 engine 5057 software error in navigation head unit warranty connected battery charger and check ran test plan and to program car inst cluster asd and fem found sib 620616 dc 6512580200 lo 0000006 performing vehicle test LO 6121528 connected battery charger lo program/encode" can anybody decipher that ?? This same thing happened to me (2016 340i) at night coming off a highway exit ramp. I was traveling rather "quickly" so this really got my attention but it has not happened since.

I took my car to the shop yesterday for this exact same thing (and a coolant issue). According to the Service Advisor, this issue has not been reported to BMW yet and they have no record for it. So pretty much they sent me on my way and said that until I can get it on video or show evidence of it happening, BMW will not approve them diving into my car to look at the issue.
It has happened to me a few times, but I cannot seem to find any patter for it. Has anyone been able to reliably recreate it and or have any advice for how I can recreate it at will to show them? The few times it has happened has been with the Nav on and exiting the highway, but its very random.

Sorry to revive old thread, but this happened on my 2016 last weekend and my car is currently getting a new cluster installed! Showed my SA OPs YouTube vid and he was going to show it to tech. Can’t believe they are changing out hardware as this seems like a software issue, but whatever I guess!
