I damaged my car but no idea how??

Weird one this, we went out to visit a place called Halton Castle. If you’ve been you’ll know it’s full of tight little roads.

Now if you’ve ever driven a MK8 Golf R you’ll be aware of just how shat the steering lock is, it’s woefully bad so this is something I’m always keeping in my mind when parking and manoeuvring.

All was fine until we visited another place and when we got out the front bumper is completely borked!

We didn’t hear a thing and cannot for the life of us remember hitting anything, absolutely baffled, I’ve scraped cars before and you always know by the horrifying noise it makes.

So confused

Castle is shyte by the way, don’t bother.

Someone has hit you whilst parked surely? Has happened a few times with my wife's car, its the reason I leave sentry mode on the Tesla on when in public car parks.

It’s got a kind of gravel debris on it.

Also the only place I parked it was with that side on the end of the carpark so nobody could have hit that side.

It feels like it’s scraped on something like sandstone or a wall.

On a first picture it looks like there are some black signs of a plastic bumper on top, possibly it was really dirty so its a bit gritty.

That’s the paint gone and the plastic underneath.

There is a spot (top right on a first image) that had a less impact to not make scratch as deep as to take paint off completely as you have in some other spots, I think this been indeed someone's dirty bumper possible reversed into you. And you should be able to wipe off those non deep marks.

Problem is the car hasn’t been anywhere since Thursday and I absolutely know the damage wasn’t there when I put the car in the garage Thursday night, and it’s impossible for it to have happened in the car park as another vehicle couldn’t have got to it.

It’s so strange!

I’m taking it to my mate this morning who owns a insurance approved body shop so I’ll see what he thinks.

I once had red marks and scratches on my F30's front bumper. As I wasn't sure where I had gotten them, I checked my dash cam footage for the past three days to convince myself that I drive safely. A few days later, in the morning, I saw my neighbor washing his red car, so I stopped for a chat. During our conversation, I realized that his car was the same color as the marks on my bumper. Long story short, it turned out that his partner had reversed into my parked car in my driveway the other morning.

There was also an episode where I had touched a stone fence with the rear bumper without noticing it until later when I saw the damage.

Seems like damage has occurred in a front to rear motion, which has been sufficient force to pop the clips at the nearside top of the bumper panel.

Looks to be fairly typical of wall damage. Were you drawing forward on full lock near a wall at all? If the car was on a loose surface like gravel, that may explain why you didn't feel anything?

Could well be it but it’s so hard to pinpoint as we just weren’t aware.

My mate who owns the body shop had a look this morning and popped the bumper back in and has booked it in for repair in a couple of weeks time.

I did some drone footage for the marketing of his new premisses just before Christmas and didn’t charge him so he said he’d sort me out with it.

Hoping it’ll only be a couple of hundred quid.

He did say if the headlight was damaged then it would be big money so hopefully I’ve dodged a bullet, doesn’t feel like that right now but it could’ve been worse.

So sounds like the moral of this story is that you're a numpty and hit things without realising?

Don't tell the insurance 'cartel', they will black list you.

I can’t afford to tell them given how much my renewal is

Car goes in to be repaired this week but the whole incident is still bugging me.

I keep going over it and the Golf R’s parking sensors come on at low manoeuvring speed and that didn’t happen, they would’ve warned me surely.

Anyway it turns out that the place I was parked in work when I’d last used it is where a colleague had their car reversed into and had similar damage.

I could ask for the cctv but really at this stage would just be for my own interest.

How very strange. Great you have a contact who can fix it for you.

The damage to me without feeling it appears to be more aggressive and abrasive then a car on car scuff. It looks like a moderate brush with a sandstone post or similar could have caused it. You'd also very likely get some paint transfer from another car.

Maybe there was a small post you didn't spot somewhere? I can't see any parking sensors on the photo but maybe they are focused more on the front?

It's also quite high up the bumper isn't it, which was making me think it was an unpainted bumper of a van, SUV or lorry... hence no paint transfer, just a grubby rubbing (ooh err)...

Fingers crossed it has not pushed in the lamp unit as they can be a pain to realign...
