Very interesting and definitely a rare case. Most people hear the whine and are not DIY'ers. Pretty scary. These motors are loud in general.

That's the other thing too, especially early model N20's SO loud. Maybe there was a slight whine and it was just hidden. Who knows...

At least in my experience, the whine was so light that I could easily see people not catching it in time. Not saying that was the case here, but it was only because I leave my windows down in my garage, and when I started it up in the mornings, I could hear just barely hear something off since it was in a confined space and the sound was echoing off the wall. When BMW tried to replicate it out in the lot, neither of us could hear it until they took a shop stethoscope to it. Then they pinpointed it and followed protocol to get the timing chain and the associated parts replaced.

I too did (and still do) early oil changes, the ASS has been off forever, never really drive it hard, and properly maintained it either myself or through the dealership. They said it's become common enough, at least at my dealership, but wasn't widespread. They also were not able to tell me what they think causes it other than saying cars with the newer parts have never been in for that issue.

Yeah that what sucks, could have been there and it was just so light, like your case.

Also, sspade I wish we could import all the failures that have been Reported to NHTSA too. It would be awesome to see the list that the lawyers have too. Supposedly the one lawyer I talked to said she has had over a few thousand phone calls.

Juts looking at the 2013 328i RWD there seem to be a lot! https://www.nhtsa.gov/vehicle/2013/B...4%252520DR/RWD

On the plus side, you're getting the updated parts installed that come along with the newer engine you found. Same as you said, after reading about these failures from others over the years, there is no way in hell that I'd keep this car outside of warranty if the timing chain was the original. Fortunately (or not?) I had that fail, and at the same time they found a valve cover gasket leak, and covered under warranty.

I think you'll be good with the new motor. Wishing you many happy miles once you get it back.

I will spend the money at an Indy shop once mine is out of warranty. I plan on keeping this car for another 5 or more years

Wow... it does appear that the 2013MY was the most problematic for the F30. I was never able to draw a direct connection to a specific model year but those numbers dont lie (when comparing to other 2012-2015).

Awesome... Yea, I have an extra vehicle to drive so I'll just work on it a few nights and over the weekend and get it done. Definitely not on my list of things I wanted to do but what can you do.

Update: Mechanic is getting ready to pull motor. He just told me once he pulled the under-tray he noticed my power steering motor hanging? WTF? I def had power steering. Looks like two bolts rattled loose long time ago and the final one finally popped out as well. Must have happened during all the towing?

Weird? Anyone have this issue?

There is a recall relating to bolts that hold power steering in place.

Edit: I believe it was a bulletin. Not recall.

I remember a few members finding bolts in their driveway/garage and that's what it ended up being...

Has anyone been able to gather any additional info on when the new parts were fitted in manufacturing? Build date of 9/13 here.

Is the root cause a failure of the chain or the tensioner, which does have a superceded as well as prior part number? I have read in this thread about both the chain as well as "components".
This is exactly the same conclusion I am coming to.

My 2014 shows the newest part number as well.

So apparently realoem does not tell you EXACTLY what part numbers are installed on your vehicle and does require some interpretation...
That's well known

They are a reference for a replacement part for your car. That would be the latest compatible and available.

Not the part your car was built with.

In fact, the only thing your VIN on realoem does is determine the 4hex car type and build date. You can see this if you simply look at the URL after that.

Hey All!

Longtime lurker on the forums, thought I would share the bad news with everyone. Back in May of 2015, I took ownership of a new to me BMW 328i F30. I have had no issues with the car for 4 Full years! It was my baby and i never beat on it since I have another car to do that in. This car was met to be my daily for many years to come and I was also planning on becoming a loyal BMW customer with hope of getting the wife in a X5 within the next year or so.

Well let's jump into the issue that made my week go to hell. Driving to work approx. 55 MPH. I get the low oil pressure light followed by the Drivetrain malfunction light. I pulled over to the side of the road asap and had it towed to BMW. BMW called today, cause of failure was timing chain which then took the whole motor out. They want $11,000 to replace the motor...... I am super frustrated since I am a year out warranty and currently sit at 107,000 miles. There were absolutely no warning signs which makes me even more upset. As I said i don't beat on the car, i coded it to jump into eco-mode at all times. It rarely comes out of eco-mode and was never modified or tuned.... Other issue, I still owe $9,000 and was planning to either trade in this month for a new BMW or pay off in full due to balloon financing. Still trying to weight in on what to do here.

I do have a case in with BMW USA right now, but highly doubt they are going to cover anything. What pisses me off is that the failure occurred because of the timing chain issue that had an extended warranty.

So currently shit out of luck and kind of stuck in a huge predicament. I babied this car and always serviced it on time. Timing chains shouldn't go like that ever.....

I will keep you all updated, but as of right now. Pretty upset BMW owner. And I understand BMW doesn't owe me anything, but this is some screwed up situation.. Especially since there was an extended warranty for this.

EDIT: BMW USA already got back to me, their not going to cover the car at all.

EDIT #2: If you are reading this and you own a 2012-early 2015 N20. I would strongly recommend spending the money to have the new timing chain and guard put in, or trade it in now. I had no warning signs.

Edit #3: Was able to source a 2016 N20 Motor. It is going in this week. Hope this problem has been dealt with and the car will last another 5 years now hahahahaha.

Edit #4: If you have had a timing chain failure: Report it to NHTSA! the more reports they receive the better chance for a recall! This also helps aid in the legitimacy of the Class action suite! It took me 5 mins to do!https://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/VehicleComplaint/

I too fear my car is suffering from the same predicament. I however heard the whining noise and immediately took it to the dealer. I know this is a F30 forum but, my problem is I can't seem to find more people with MY2013 F10's citing these timing chain issues. All in the thread and soon to join the thread please continue to detail your experiences as they happen. I just want to get more of an idea of what to expect until I here something back from the SA.

***Quick back story***
I used to own a MY2014 320i xDrive:
https://cdn.bimmerpost.com/forums/at...1&d=1561468269

Unfortunately this was the beauty after heading to work a 8 months ago:
https://cdn.bimmerpost.com/forums/at...1&d=1561468269

Someone ran a stop sign and the Insurance took the rest

Just hoping to have some time with the F10. Bought it 6 months ago with 50k miles and currently has 57k

I have made an appointment to get my timing chain and oil chain replaced next Monday at an indy shop. Should I get water pump and oil pump done at the same time (116k miles)?

I plan to keep the car several more years and I do a lot of highway driving. It is cost-effective for me to spend even a few thousand on repairs. I priced trading to a newer 328i without this potential problem, but that would cost me $8-10k, so this repair is much cheaper and will give me peace of mid when I'm on a road trip a thousand miles from home.

Not certain about the oil pump replacement but I'd say doing the water pump is smart preventative maintenance at/near 100K mile mark.
Typically oil pumps last near forever, but I think I recall some issues on these N20/26 motors in that regard, hmm...
