Just got it back from the shop that looked at it for 2 weeks.

They took off the transmission pan, and said they found metal shavings and now the car won't go into reverse but will go into drive.
Drive-train malfunction only appears when you put the vehicle in neutral or reverse.

Still don't quite understand how something like that could happen when in drive? How did me driving in "drive" effect reverse? Who knows.

Called about 10 different places and found a place that'll get a used transmission in the car for $2800.

The shavings show that something was rubbing on something else that it shouldn't have. If you look at the innards of a transmission there's a lot of stuff spinning about, so it's possible something rubbed against the reverse gear sprocket while the car was in drive.

One more reason to DISREGARD LIFETIME TRANSMISSION OIL statements by BMW and change the oil & filter after 40K to 60K miles, your choice but do it! Expensive, but who knows what you will prevent, $$$.
Just had my transfer case oil changed and noticed a difference when turning from a dead stop..

Sorry for the late update, I did go with a transmission replacement.
$2900 in total and installed for a used transmission with 3k miles and 6 month warranty.

That seems like a pretty good outcome, all things considered.

Same thing happened to me months ago, car is still down. Got a replacement valve body and EGS, got it reprogrammed and still doing the same thing! POS!

Next step is to replace the actual tranny I guess.

Send me a message, I have a good shop I went to out in Fort Worth, TX. I see that you're in Dallas so it might be close to you. Every shop wanted 3k+ but ended up only spending 2.9k out the door, installed, and everything.

421342 Transmission Malfunction Code

I saw your post and wanted to add to the knowledge base on this problem if possible.

My wife's 2015 x5 35i xdrive M-sport experienced exactly the same problem, casually driving to work (< 3miles), then all the sudden transmission malfunction. Fortunately she was able to coast downhill into a parking area and get safely off the road.

The x5 has ~99k miles, has a GA8HP45Z ZF transmission. Towed vehicle to BWM Mastertech Indy shop. Indy shop found the same code I did (421342, which is the same as one of your codes). I could clear the code, but once I start the vehicle, it would immediately come back. The transmission is stuck in park. The vehicle also had 420341 code (Gear-ratio monitoring...), but I was able to clear that code and it didn't return (probably because the vehicle is un-drivable and there is nothing to monitor). The Indy shop sent me the attached pics from ZF on the failure. (the middle pic indicates a sheered off ring in one of the gearing mechanisms, so much for a robust transmission as is claimed by ZF).

There's a youtube video on the ZF 8HP transmission tear down (explains how the 8HP works) by John Kelly of the Automotive Technology Department - Transmission Lab @ Weber State if your interested in learning more about this transmission. Link is here:

Hope this helps in understanding the problem. Needless to say, I'm not happy about it. Never had a BMW transmission do such a thing before. This car is babied too!

ZF has been recommending transmission servicing around 50K miles for years now. You're correct, don't listen to BMW when it comes to transmission service recommendations; their definition of lifetime is the warranty/lease period.

FYI ZF recently released a new guidance doc that says 150,000km. Of course, hard driving, tracking, or other conditions may warrant a shorter interval. This is for the ZF8. See attached.

I don't think oil change intervals would have helped in this failure case. That small failure area of cast metal looks abit weak to be supported by the mass of that entire ring assembly.
