What a mess. Harry's assessment of that car is spot on.

Whilst this is a classic CRABlobb troll post I do agree. The real issue is the safe strategy of all platforms for all people, a bespoke ICE is much better and a bespoke EV is much better, each to their intended purposes. Harrys referral back to i3 and i8 is also spot on, what happened, that tech and Carbon infused concept never made it to a toned down 3er or 5er model without all the silly blue plastic bits. Odd, its like they just threw it away and started again.
The crazy size of the new 5 for no Frunk in the EVs and the rear room looks totally unacceptable to me, as to be fair does the boot space and the range (for battery size and cost) is frankly ludicrous. BMW has lost it with its flagship, mighty impressive LCI required earlier than the usual 3 years, this will well like ... something that sells badly.

Showing your bias here -
Best I could get down to it being electric was weight and range......range applies to all electric cars and the weight could apply to an IC car? The rest - price, quality, steering, suspension, cockpit, driver interface etc etc. could apply to any car It's just a shit car. The leccy has very little to do with it |

JoeAchilles test of one is less damning except on price. Very fast, not sure of the design, a bit downmarket interior compared to last one, but punts along the road very nicely..... but at 100k / 120k with extras just massively overpriced for anyone except those who get it as a tax saving company car...
But then lots of new car prices are ridiculous these days. Glad to have ticked boxs whilst I could as I wont be punting £80k to £100k on something new any time soon... |

I'm not pro electric as I think most on here would realise. But you can't judge an entire genre of cars on one single product, in much the way you couldn't have judged all IC cars as being terrible just because Tata launched the Nano. The use case for EV's with their range and infrastructure isn't for everyone but by that same token it doesn't make them bad for everyone. Harry's review seems fair for the particular car in question and he is someone who is generally pretty unbiased with his stuff so I'd tend to believe him. Will it stop it being a big seller? Unlikely, most people don't care about a lot of this stuff.

Harry is usually quite diplomatic when disappointed by a car, but he really didn't hold back at all on this occasion
I think some of it's chintziness (crystal shift knob anyone?) and low rent cabin quality is down to the i5 also being made in Shenyang, China, so some cross contamination of market tastes and parts. I guess they have to do that to compete with BYD. BMW is the only brand currently where I look at a car they were famous for, compare it to a current one and think "What the actual...." but I guess people actually like this shat and are willing to pay for it. |

I wonder if had the car been an eDrive 40 would the review have been different?
340hp, up to 357 miles range and a fair bit cheaper. It doesn't seem like a bad car, any more so than the i4 is a bad car, it'll be sublime to drive, and I'm just glad it's not a bloody SUV or crossover like the majority of EVs. At one time you would pay £25k+ more for a twin turbo V8 version of the 5, with all the drama, noise and engineering, plus the chassis upgrades etc. Now it's the same car as the slower model except it reaches a given speed a few seconds faster, no more special. It's a lot of money for just speed. The looks are growing on me, they're already making the G30 look a bit dated, and I say that as an owner, still rather have an ICE version though, and not for anywhere near list! |
