i-Drive warning

For those of you who have moved from the f3x platform to 5er or other versions.

Had this pop up a few times recently as image below, only happens when driving in the rain with wipers going, screen / camera is obviously clean. Takes about 20minutes of rain driving for it it pop up.

15min after the rain stops it goes away! Doesnt seem to be any internal leaks to affect the camera.

Any info would be helpful before it goes to the dealer, who will just tell me they couldn't find a fault / it didn't do it !!

Thanks

This happens to me from time to time, invariably when it's raining hard and usually when I'm on the motorway. It's a feature, not a fault - I dismiss the message and it doesn't come back.

It's probably the screen misting up in front of the lens, and not benefiting from the airflow from the AC to clear it. Try turning on the rear demister, as this should activate the camera demister too.

Ahh! didn't realise there was such a thing, I'll give that a go.

Thanks for the heads up

Had this myself on the G05 X5 when the rain was so severe that the wipers on full tilt were struggling to cope. I could barely see, so understandable that the camera was no better. There wasn't a fault as such, just a limitation of the system in extreme conditions.

That said, my mate had the same message but actually had the heating element fail on his X5 (if you look on the windscreen where the cameras are housed, you'll see them) and that was going to require a new windscreen...being out of warranty and due to shortly change the car, he declined.

Yep, had this the other day when got hit with a load of water from a passing truck. Stopped the car and gave the top of the screen a wipe but didn’t clear the message, drove home and notification was still there, went out next morning and notification gone. Not reoccurred since.

Happens from time to time when muck or ice covers the driver assistence sensors. Or when in carwash and foam does. It's just an alert to suggest difficult conditions and you have to pay attention and drive like you used to in the pre nanny era.

I think the driving assistance system cameras and sensors are in a sealed unit unaffected by interior screen misting, or at least they seem to be in my 840i. I get the same message on occasion in very heavy rain, usually at speed. To me it seems that it’s only the condition of the outside of the screen that triggers this warning, usually when the rain is so heavy that the screen gets waterlogged between sweeps of the wipers.

My understanding is that it's the reduced visibility from all the spray, and the cameras/sensors can no longer confidently read what's going on in front of the car; where the road markings are, obstacles in your path etc, and it's warning you to have your wits about you and not rely on it until conditions improve.

I don't think it's due to misting on screens etc, just general lack of visibility of the road ahead. Prolonged fog gives a similar message.

You'd think they'd make sure the wipers cleaned the sensor like the rest of the windscreen, I have to say that BMW are as good at implementing this stuff as they were 20 years ago when they fitted auto rain sensing wipers they've never worked properly and they are continuing that tradition.

In my experience the X3 has the worst implementation I recall my X3M slamming on the brakes multiple times for no good reason and often flashing up the collision warning indicator with the accompanying alert noise very distracting, a loaner I had recently decided my road had 5mph speed limit and went crazy telling me to slow down, I've often thought if these systems ever get connected to the gov half the country would be banned within a week.

And those that rely on these systems I noticed that with the state of the white lines on many roads it doesn't pick them up, but on roads where the council have implemented one of their natty road "improvement" schemes turning a perfectly straight safe road into a white line festooned zig zag obstacle course (that everyone has to ignore to allow traffic to flow) it will try and push you into oncoming traffic.

Thats makes sense, just wasn't aware that everyone has the issue, thought it was maybe a fault with the car, obviously not just another piece of poor design tech. Although I'm liking the adaptive lights and high beam function which I guess uses the camera.

Thanks for all the inputs.

The camera is in the swept area of the wipers but it sensibly gives a warning not to rely on it if the vision is nevertheless obscured due to poor visibility. I don't see a problem.

That's great but it doesn't change the fact that I do, for me the driver assistance tech in BMWs isn't all of that and I prefer as little as possible, when my 7 series goes back I probably won't be looking at a new one due to it.

I mean specifically, not generally. By which I mean that if you don't like it that of course is fine but I mean specifically to this message: if the vision of the camera is compromised it is sensible that it warns you.

If you don't like the tech at all, that's a fair point, but an entirely separate one.

I always use the driver assistance pro to get me to work in commuter traffic. Also on long trips. In boring situations it does serve a purpose.

Focusing on my thoughts or chatting to folk while paying loose attention to the road..it steers and follows road markings and speeds up slows down autobrakes etc even in bumper to bumper traffic and its very smooth....another reduction of burden..and a cuppa too sometimes

I'd struggle with that system but if it works be different to letting the wife drive I guess..

Wife's driving is on a whole different level of danger than the auto driving tech.
