Great to hear some folk thinking about their health goals and making progress, however slow. Keep it up!

At the start of 2023 I had a golf goal to get down to the old cat 1, 5 handicap coming from an 8 handicap.
Spent hours on the range in preseason, felt like I was really in the right place to go at it, only to get a back injury which cost me nearly 2 months of the early season, playing through the pain and injury. When it finally healed, I'd introduced all sorts of compensations which meant my game was so over the place. End result was in Nov my handicapp had slumped to it's highest number in over 10 years, on the precipice of double figures at 9.3...
So Santa, this year my wish is that in my first golf season as a fifty year old, please can I go through healthy 1st and foremost, and ideally trim a few shots off my game..

I achieved my 2023 goal by getting a distinction in my masters.

I’ve also been offered a very decent job which starts in the new year so I suppose my goal for 2024 is to make the most of that!

Also health goals, they’re always on the table

Congrats on the distinction and the new job. I managed to change jobs in the middle of mine which made finishing it (and my dissertation) a tad more challenging than it may have been!

Thanks, I can only image how hard it would be juggling other commitments, one of the reasons why I decided to take the year off to do it which actually turned into 18 months in the end as I wanted to spend time doing things like taking the children to school etc

Time to get earning again now.

Almost out of nowhere my broadly steady life is about to be shaken up hugely.
Mid-Jan we move house. It’s to a “dream house” scenario, with my Dad into its annexe. And to afford it we’re trying to sell our house and also my Dad’s bungalow. His place should complete on the same day as the purchase (hardest fingers crossed you could imagine…) in which case leaves us with temporarily renting out / holiday letting our house - that’s about “manageable” financially but very stressy. If my Dad’s sale falls through we’re looking at letting two places, then I’m bricking it.
Meanwhile on Dec 22nd the company I work for sold a big chunk of its business. That reduces the revenue I’m responsible to sell (I’m Head of Sales) by about two thirds. I think the intense focus on sales within the remaining smaller business will be huge - that’s kinda OK but it’s a very different direction to the last 28 years (no typo!) I’ve been there!! New boss as well in Jan, and I genuinely can’t predict how things are going to pan out.
With this “new 2024 playing field” I think the goals I can think of that I should try to do irrespective of what happens that I’m struggling to predict are::
Do my best to accommodate our new family living arrangements
Be braver in saying what I think or feel more often
Get fitter
And if things maybe get settled somehow, push myself to organise the collaborative charity fund raising idea I have for July.

Cool to see everyones different focuses across a range of ages & backgrounds it pretty cool..

Please do come back perhaps as you achieve milestones or get some good progress and let us know about it.

I watch a youtube channel called goal guys where he essentially sets himself a goal and monitors his progress with videography until completion etc.. It's quite inspiring and I encourage anyone struggling for motivation no matter the subject be it weight, education, money etc to watch it might help.

One goal we've just achieved today is that we've exactly 2 years until our mortgage is paid off; I'll be 47 which is mega really (3 years younger than my Dad was when he & Mum paid off their mortgage)

My last quarterly bonus for 2023 will pay the lump sum for 2024s allowance (with a bit left over to pop into the car fund) and we'll keep the monthly payments at the max

It's amazing what working for someone else allows you to do after 14 years of running your own business & ripping your hair out, week in/week out wondering if you're going to be bring any money into the household etc. Having a monthly salary, monthly & quarterly bonuses is just that, a huge bonus!

Best thing I did back in April 2022!

Plus no pressure from them re my op and having time off around it either; it's great my colleagues are all drunken Dublin reprobates haha

My own goals:

1) Put a ring on it. She's been patiently waiting for nearly 10 years.
2) Learn how to use ISTA. Bought it 6 months ago and have used it twice since.
3) Be braver with my consumer rights and not just accept shoddy goods and services.
4) Merge my myriad pensions and up my contributions.
5) Go private healthcare. The NHS is crumbling.
6) Spend less money on the car! Obviously that goal is last in the list as it's unlikely to happen

Have a good one all, and a prosperous and jolly 2024

Can highly recommend private healthcare after everything I've been through this year and the experiences I've had etc

We'll be looking into health insurance very soon; I'm going to speak to my boss about it too as I'll be moving from being a contractor to a full/perm employee in Feb as that's my 22 months time done in my job

And No.6? Wuss

Move house.

Buy a supercar.

It's a buyers market at the moment on both fronts. Might as well make the most of it.

1. Stay out of hospital, nearly didn't make 2024.
2. Buy another car again (haven't really had one since pre-covid).
3. lose some weight - giving up alcohol will help a lot (and 'm not a big drinker).
4. continue walking to help keep the mind healthy (walked 4.6m steps in 2023)
5. contemplate a career change - 23 years in the same company is starting to get old.

good luck on all fronts - especially staying out of hospital! I thought I had done well to walk nearly 3.5m steps...

I dont find stopping drinking does much for my weight but cutting back on carbs certainly does...

I might do the same on one of those but as I am down sizing, it being a buyers market doesnt really help me!

No new cars though, need to keep topping up my pension so I can retire at some point!

2024 goals:

Health, Fitness & Wellbeing:

Get my VO2 max to 47ml/kg (did get it to 45 in 2023, but it's dropped back to 42 following my hip surgery in November)

Weight from 74kg and 16% bodyfat to about 72kg and 14% bodyfat

Strength - Bench my bodyweight again, and squat and deadlift 100kg (depending on hip surgery recovery)

Do something challenging - current thoughts are 3 day/2 nights wild backpacking trek in the Highlands with both dogs, covering at least 50 miles

Personal:

Read 12 proper books. Like a lot of people I used to read avidly, but not so much over last decade. Got back in to it a bit this year, but only read 7!

Don't buy or sell a car for a whole calendar year

Some advice; forget the deads... You don't need them

Stick to squats and bench and maybe chuck some zerchers in there too; but deads are one exercise that for me, unless you're a powerlifter or strongman, isn't needed due to how much of a risk the exercise can be to a lot of joints etc (and I was both and competed for 20 years)!

When I'm not broken I do still deadlift, but on a 60mm bar and for grip; so it's not heavy at all (for me)

Squats are a much better exercise all round

I don't usually set goals, however last year I made my resolution to do my motorbike license, which I did.

This year I start a new job (next Monday) which is a bit of a career change. Still engineering, but this time its motorbikes rather than cars. So my focus this year will be to get fully established in my new place of work and also to get a new working routine around the kids, what with the new job being in the office everyday (rather than my previous 100% WFH). It's going to be challenging!

After the last 4 months of 23, I’ll just be happy to get through 24 without a mental health breakdown and killing someone.

2023 has been dreadful for me from a business perspective, so I’ll just settle for ‘better’ in 2024.

Main aim is to have a better 2024, than 2023 has been - which tbh has many many lows but some highs.
