I don't use the cloud stuff with my camera. Just swap SD cards every time I go drive the car overnight and review footage if needed or review stuff via wifi when I get into the car.

IF you have a hotspot (from Verizon, etc) you can have it upload to the cloud continuously

I have the Thinkware F800 PRO with front and rear cameras that I hardwired myself. I've been pretty happy with it. The only downside is that the Thinkware microSD cards are expensive and the camera doesn't work well with other brands of cards.

Have you tried Samsung? My blackvue technically only goes up to 128gb cards but with the samsung card below in works perfect with 256gb

I use the BlackVue DR750S-2CH with backup battery and have been pretty happy with it. Highly suggest a backup battery over the Power Magic Pro. After doing some research, BMW drivers had issues with it not working and you also don't want to cycle a $500 battery on a dash cam.

Main gripe with Thinkware was the bulky look, and how you're unable to customize notifications so it can be very chatty over the Blackvue.

For SD cards just make sure you get one that has a high write speed. It's the same with any video recording device. There are a lot of pixels so the storage needs to be able to support that write speed or you'll run into issues. They are usually branded as SDHC/SDXC or something of the sort. High capacity va extended capacity

Thinkware dashcams work with the proprietary branded storage card. Blackboxmycar claimed that the Sandisk cards were also validated to work with the cameras so I tried them. One worked for a few months, the second one didn't work at all.

OP: Btw, if you're going to install yourself and hardwire to the fuse box, be sure to order the extended power cable. The out-the-box one from the manufacturer isn't long enough.

As a pure dashcam, I think best bang for the buck would be Viofo A119 v2, I have it and for its price, it is really great.

P.S. for A119v2, make sure you also order a GPS module (for accurate time/date/location/speed) and it is also used as a perfect mounting kit, so dashcam can be easily removed if needed. And if mostly driving in bright sunlight, also order CPL filter.

I promise you it isn't proprietary, just rebranded. There are only a couple nand/flash manufacturers in the world. Capacity, read and write speed is all you need to worry about. If thinkware won't tell you the R/W specs on their rebranded card it's just to fatten their own pockets. Any Sdcard highly rated for GoPros or DSLR cameras should suffice.

Do you use a Thinkware dash cam? I've tried highly rated memory cards from a different brand. The camera would randomly turn off and restart while in use, which is not desirable behavior in this type of device. I'm not paying extra for their cards for the heck of it. The camera is more reliable with the branded card. Perhaps they've addressed this issue with the newer F800 Pro D+ models, but it's something I encounter with the camera that I purchased in April 2018.

If all you want to do is to deter a potential break-in suspect, then you will need a SURVEILLANCE CAMERA mounted to your house, not a dash cam in your car! Quite ironically, dash cams attract car thieves, and is among the top stolen items in break-in claims. I had a high-end dash cam before, one morning I found my window shattered, and the only thing missing was the front dash cam. Think about it this way, if you are a car thieve, and you broke into a parked car, got whatever you wanted, don't you want to just yank the dash cam off of the windshield to destroy all the evidences? After all, the SD card is inside the camera. To put a 300+ dollar dash cam in your car, you are only asking for more break-ins. Think about your glass, your insurance deductible, your leather upholstery, your CARFAX record for resale.

Dash cams are designed to catch the moment of an accident, so you can provide no-fault evidence to your insurance company. Parking mode has been overly hyped. Yes, your Li+ battery pack provides 24h+ extra recording time, but how many days of footage can be stored in your SD card? Unless you do a careful walk-around inspection everytime you get into your car, by the time you find a paint scratch on your passenger side door, the footage is long gone. Plus, if someone intentionally keys your car on the side, it won't trigger either motion detector or acceleration detector, provided you don't have a 4-channel setting.

For those wondering what SD cards are best. I have a Blackvue 750s 2ch. I use Samsung 128 PRO Endurance microSD cards, and they work fine (you need min 2 cards, so you can switch to preserve potential footages). Any high endurance cards designed for continuous read/write may be suitable. For a 2ch FHD setup, 128GB gives you 2.5-3 days of footage, 64GB lasts 1.5-2days. If you opt for a 4k 2ch, these may be halved.

I use the Vantrue T2 which I think is often overlooked. One of the most important things I wanted was a parking mode as I park in an active garage with mediocre camera coverage. The T2 plugs into the OBD port and has a microwave sensor which I've configured to detect motion within about 5 feet in front of my car. The OBD port provides enough power to run the motion sensor and record video when activated, without draining my car battery. If the voltage on the battery dips too low, it simply shuts off. I've left my car parked for a few days at a time with no battery issues (the camera shows recording as I walk up to it).

If you don't want to take the OBD route, you can also power it via USB port in the cigarette lighter or plug it in to an external battery. They also support rear-facing cameras as well. For the features and price, it was an easy pick for me.

I wish there were something like this but with dual channel. Is OBD live even 10+ min after car shuts off to keep running parking mode unless the voltage gets too low?

Rexing dashcams are amazingly reliable. I have one in the front and the rear. Super easy to hardwire also. I have 2 because I didn't know that I could buy the front and rear option lol. So I have 2. Combined with the gps logger, it's amazing. I was involved in a hit and run a few months back and the cameras caught the culprit. Police got to them and my car's damaged got paid for. Super clean quality videos. It's also the number one rated on amazon.com. Also, it has a very descents design.
