You're running it with cold oil for a lot longer as it will take longer to warm up. It will definitely increase internal wear which is why the manual tells you not to do it

Probably not why it sounds like that though, take it to a garage, as far away from any kwik fit as is humanly possible as let them have a look at it

If it's the chain tensioner then you might be able to get it checked for free by BMW

My workmate with a 10 year old 123d had a new tensioner fitted free of charge so worth a call

Rang BMW UK (Found the above bulletin online) and he just said zero recalls for your car so nothing they can and will do.

This refers to Exx cars so possibly it's different for Fxx cars although the engine is still the N47

That pretty much some it's up! This is a 63 so probably out of that as well. He literally just ran the reg seen no recalls and left it at that. Strastone and Sandal are not cheap. So may fine a specialist locally.

Kills me for getting a new car next year. Still hoping it maybe oil filter elated or something like that but having listened to a few YouTube videos... the tank noise isn't great!

The notorious N47 tensioner problem doesn't make *your* noise (it's more metallic than induction/exhaust); nor does the issue relating to the recalls, let go as suddenly as yours has (it slowly gets worse, not, next morning it's broken). It does need looking at fairly urgently though I'd offer.

Have you changed fuels/fuel stations recently? Bad batch?

OP's issue, definitely investigate... particularly for timing chain issues. Not unknown (with new oil), to get more noise when there is a problem developing.

Yeah it did seem strange that it was fine one night then not the next. Spoke to a specialist and sent him the video and he said don't start it again going to go bang and then it will be double costs.

Still part of me that doesn't get the sudden change! I filled up a few days earlier, normal petrol station, but brimmed it more than normal

Oil developing or not, would this be a re-drain and change? He also said it sounds like it's running on 3 or 3.5 cylinders which I am not sure about as it;s never missed a beat before now engine wise!

I did think when watching your video that it wasnt running on all 4, there is a definite rocking to the engine which points to something out of balance

The best plan is to get it to a specialist asap, there's a limit to what can be diagnosed over the internet :-)

Best way to warm a car up is to start it and then drive it asap.

hi mate, unsure what the problem is - could be a number of issues. take it to german autocare in wakefield, 01924 369898, monkton road industrial estate, just off denby dale road. highly recommended specialist and good prices.
as for warming up before setting off, your car just needs enough time for the diagnostics to check that all is ok and for any check lights to extinguish (and any new ones to activate if required) - 1 minute at most. modern engines are designed to warm up on the move and under moderate load - drive straight away, but don't give it the beans until up to temp (90-100 deg).
more importantly is the stopping/turning off procedure - when parked up and handbrake on, leave for 1/2 to 1 minute for all fluids to settle and for the turbo to 'spool down' and settle, and turn off.
fwiw, i am an angineer, so am a bit picky regarding my cars servicing and running/operating procedures ...

I looked at that place other day gave them a call Thursday and they didn’t come back to me there’s one not far from me in Wakefield! Might try get it there.

The Mrs has made me mega paranoid asking if I have put petrol in instead of diesel, I was convinced I hadn’t, but as I’ve driven her car a bit (petrol) it’s made me really paranoid!!

If I did it wouldn’t sound like that would it? There’s no way of checking is there? Brimmed full tank as well!

I thought the nozzle of a petrol pump wouldn’t fit in a diesel but it might be the other way around!

Correct, you can't normally fit a diesel pump nozzle into a petrol.

Running petrol through a diesel engine would knacker the high pressure fuel pump, eventually causing it to seize and the chain to snap. This is because petrol is a solvent and strips the lubrication from the fuel pump.

Perhaps take the filler cap off and have a sniff, should be able to tell fairly quickly I'd have thought?

Echo the comments above, that sounds like it's running on all 4 but badly as though it's been misfuelled. Could also have a glow plug issue. Have a good smell at the tank filler, you'll be able to smell petrol amongst the diesel.

Have you checked for codes?

What does the receipt say you put in?
