In most cases, staggered wheels is just a difference in width, having the rear wheels/tires wider than the front. For a while there, like in the case of the 330ci, they would +1 size the rear wheel. This shouldn't affect this as long as the overall diameter remains the same. Example: (225/45ZR17 F, and 225/40ZR18 R)

Transfer Case was replaced under warrantee @ 41,000 miles. No computer codes were thrown. Just me noticing some very subtle issues with the drivability. When going thru a medium sized corner and under low/mid acceleration, I could feel the car doing a "stutter". Disconnect the TC, the issue went away. It seemed to be making a subsonic noise/rumble that was masked by the long on tooth stock tires.

Was the noise it was making a rhythmic humming sound? Like on/off, not constant? My car is doing this, thought it was the tires originally but after my last service the noise didn't change any (assuming they rotated tires during service...).

Yeah I stuck with the same size rims when i swapped mine out just to be safe. Although now I have 8.5 in stead of 8's. I was told and looking it up, no changes to im happy with my set up now

Trust. You would not want to see or chance that after you feel the wrath of the transfer case bill. Take our advice young grasshopper

So did you have a CEL for the NOX sensors? Mine has been lit up but im not sure which sensor it is. Ive been riding it out till my DEF runs out. I was told it could be the DEF I used since it was close to a year being stored. IDK but ill try it out since the sensors are 600+ each and i dont know which one is triggering it

Oh, I have no intention on going staggered (I like being able to rotate my tires and the BMW 405m 18" wheels I have don't have a staggered option). Just wondering what the risk profile looks like for square setups.

Mine sat idle for a month in the winter with snow and ice build up on it throughout that time. When I returned back to it is when the light came on. I took it to the dealership and they performed a software update on it and said it could be issues with software (showed me the repair manual process and it stated it in BMWs own documentation). Said to come back if it came on again. Sure as hell it came on again a week later then they replaced the sensor and there hasn't been any issues with it since.

I doubt it sitting had anything to do with it, I just refilled my DEF tank for the first time in 2 years (it was last filled on the last free oil change) I never had a issue with it. My NOX sensor went out on the test drive at 25 miles. It's an issue with the actual part, not the DEF.

You can take your chances. If it happens to your xdrive, your pocket is not going to be very happy unless you have a lot of cash to burn. I don't...

...and a square setup helps to turn the car better.

Will an OEM staggered setup accelerate the transfer case failure?

How is this any differenent from other staggered setups on x-drive cars? is it a diesel issue?

I'm very curious as to how a staggered width set up vs square as it's been put here, can cause failure to the transfer case?

I can completely see a circumference variance causing problems, as it would cause bind on the system. But tire width should have absolutely zero affect on it to the best of my knowledge.

Can someone please elaborate?

I have 119,XXX miles on my 2014 328d purchased new in December 2013. I have had 3 transfer cases replaced (warranty) at 50k, 90k and 115k. Car left me stranded on the highway each time..Dealer can't explain it but it doesn't seem to be that prevalent on internet searches. Anyway, other than a broken horn, i've done maintenance as CBO suggests. Nothing more, nothing less and runs great.

Wow that is crazy! Sorry to hear.
What are your tire sizes? And in what wheels?
