Bootmod3 - please advise :)

Hi

I currently run JB4 (map 5) but want to move to BM3, and would need advice as to what my course of action should be;

Background:
I have upgraded exhaust, intake with BMC air filter, and coming soon is an HJS catted downpipe.

Although we have plenty of reputable tuners in France, we have no authorized BM3 dealers or even in nearby Belgium. And asking them if they would work with BM3 resulted in a plain and simple "we don't support this platform".

Now I don't want to unmount and send my DME as i don't feel knowledgeable enough to do that.

Questions then:

Based on my car mods, is there an off the self map that would work? Can i go to any tuner and just ask them to unlock my DME, then buy the BM3 kit and plug the OBD device?

Or should i ask tuners to work to build a custom map, then install the BM3 - will it be able to pickup my tuned map without erasing it / replace it with its OTS map?

Or can i simply buy my BM3 kit online, and bring it to my tuner with my car and ask them to work with it with no prior knowledge of the platform?

Please forgive the perhaps basic questions, having only read about BM3 it isn't easy to grasp how this would work without actually having my hands on it.

You can have your local shop unlock the DME. Purchase bm3 directly from PTF and work with them to set up the licensing and they do have OTS maps for your particular setup. The only thing you need your Tuner to do is unlock. The rest is easy. PTF will send you a file you can upload it to your personal drop box or use iOS cloud drive as I do and directly upload the map to your agent. It's super simple.

You will need an internet connection and the BM3 app.

PTF can walk you through steps if you get stuck.

You will also need OBD enet cable. This seller on eBay makes the best quality cables period.

Then BM3 is a no brainer. Sell the JB4 and enjoy.

Thanks !
Sounds rather straightforward
And would i not lose the benefit of a custom tune? If the OTS map is designed for stock / stage 1?

You can always custom tune and have that extra map. You can have 20 maps stored on your agent if you want, or 100. There is no limit.
Any tuner can write you a tune map and send it to you in a bin file or bm3 file to your email which is uploaded to bm3 agent device.

Thanks! So plan would be:
- Order BM3
- go to tuner ask to unlock DME, install BM3 and ask them to provide me with bin flash tune + stock tune, that i'll be able to load on BM3

Sounds like a plan

You will need to unlock your DME 1st and have the tuner provide you with the oem map readout which you will supply to PTF along with your VIN. The agent cloud will automatically come pre-loaded with your stock readout that you can revert to anytime.

If you do not have the readout for PTF it will just put you at a standstill until you do. At least that was how it was done last year in the early BM3 stages.

Also check with Darkiedm4 . Last I checked he was a Belgian BM3 dealer and that is relatively close to you.

Another question - once we've setup the bm3, can i go to a regular tuner for a custom tune (e.g. BR Performance) and ask them to work with bm3 even if they have never worked with the platform?
Just ask them to send me the binary file?

Or would they do their tuning work and save it to the DME tables directly and another readout needs to be done to save it as another bm3 map?

In this case can i do that readout myself?

Questions, questions... i prefer to do my homework extensively as this is an expensive investment and i want to make sure it works out well

The standard maps from PTF will cover 90% of all the modifications out there. I think you'll have less than 5% extra to gain from a custom tune.
If you do want a custom tune then PTF can also do that. You send them a log and they will optimise where possible.

From my experience, the OTS maps work, but you can't really expect them to work flawlessly for every car. I'm having some trouble with my F25 (X3), but I currently have a ticket open with PTF to try and diagnose...

I dont think it makes sense to drill the N55 DME. Fairly easy to open. The N20 is a whole different story though!

Rev 1 and 2 of my OTS also had all kinds of weird issues. I'll enjoy my BEF and give the guys some much needed time to sort it out

Ah so the picture isn't as bright and sunny

I'm a strong supporter of the bm3 idea, but perhaps it's just too early for me to jump in, i really can't risk a limp mode in the middle of overtaking :-(
