Beware of what you buy
Recently I was in the market for a JB4 PWG for my car. Being located in Canada I wanted to avoid shipping and duties and as such wanted to take advantage of my family visit to SoCal to buy one in person from a member there. "Luckily" I found a forum member selling a 1 year old PWG JB4 for asking price of $350. After some negotiation, where I did mention that the going rate shipped seemed to be around $250 we agree on $250 with me picking it up. The seller was on vacation in Puerto Rico until the evening before I was leaving. So we did not have much overlap in Socal before my return to Canada. We agreed to meet early the morning of my return at a coffee shop in Irvine, and I literally had minutes to spare befofe getting in the car to drive to LAX. I arrived. He seemed like a nice enough guy and we had already chatted about the condition of the unit and he had mentioned it worked fine and was in great shape. From the outside the unit looked good. I paid and we parted ways. I drove back to where we were staying, put the unit in a new ziplock bag and packed it in my luggague before driving to LAX and coming back to Canada. Since the weather in my hometown of Ottawa has been really cold and snowy I had to wait until a warm day to install the unit. But once I did have a day such as this I installed the unit only to find extreme hesitation and jerkyness. After checking my install, I opened the JB4 enclosure to find the unit rusted out. To be fair I bought the unit on March 15th but it was in the ziplock bag till April 6th. I contacted Burger Motorsports who have confirmed the board is dead. I have contacted the seller and suggested that we split the cost of the replacement board, but the seller is basically saying sorry but tough luck and I should have bought a brand new one. And I had the chance to open the unit and inspect it when he sold it. Be careful what you buy and who you buy it from. Don;t get scammed like me and don't be trusting. Now I am out $179 plus shipping to get areplacement board, and have to hope the harness is still fine.

Unfortunate lesson learned to either always pay using a method that has some protection or make sure you have the person's address to be able to make an in-person follow up visit
sucks you got screwed

Since it has been asked, his name is socalf30 and he is from Mission Viejo. I should have known better when I asked for his number and gave him mine, only for him to not give me his. I suggested it would be easier to communicate that way instead of forum PMs.
Here is his last PM to me: Look man I don't know what to tell you besides that I am sorry that it was defective. If I was you and opened it and it looked like that I wouldn't have bought it. I had no idea that the inside was burnt like that, but at the end of the day you still get a JB4 for cheap. Either end of the deal you win, with other JB4 they could ship it to you without the board and delete their account then you're really without anything. So while I apologize for this dilemma, just buy straight from the source with anything other than pipes.

Im wondering if keeping it in a plastic bag for two weeks... traveling from hot to cold... and from pressurized to non pressurized environment made the problem much worse.
I also wonder if a used copy or Bootmod3 would do that too... |

lol, what a response.
"I'm sorry I willingly and knowingly sold you a defective unit and you didn't open it up and inspect it before buying so I made out like a bandit and there is nothing you can do about it, sorry about your luck." Fixt*

obviously, hindsight is 20/20, but the sellers who are worth a damn and aren't out to scam you won't ever have a problem giving you their number or some kind of information to put you at ease, that should have been red flag enough to walk away.

That amount of rust did not happen in two or three weeks. The corrosion on those solder joints has turned green. That takes time. That thing has been wet for months.
I hope you got a new wiring harness along with the new board. That connector looks like it is toast.

it frying like that doesn't look like a defect. bwcause of the rust their had to be moisture/water and that is likley what fried it. I would check his post/thread history and look for a something regarding jb4 related problems.. sucks
