Buying a car with out of state plates
found this nice bmw x5 near me but the seller never registered the car and still has Ohio plates on it. What is the process to register it in california. thanks

Yes/no. I bought an out of state car. All you really need to do is get it smogged. If it passes, you can re-register it in CA. Everything else is registration, title, etc. from the previous owner (much like CA).
Personally, given it's from Ohio, I'd have a GOOD look under the car. Snow and salt does some bad things to underbodies of cars. |

I bought a car from out of state back in July. Keep in mind that you need a VIN inspection as well, which isn't the case for buying cars in CA. Due to COVID the DMV wasn't doing VIN inspections for quite a while, but they finally are now, I was able to get one done. Between smog and the VIN verification it's a bit more hassle but overall not a big deal.

One more think to add... You only do all this thing mention above when you are buying from a private seller.
If your buying from a dealer, they going to do all this for you... Only thing you gonna do is sign papers and drive the car home or get it transported. I bought a car this way from Texas.... Drove it home to LA. |
