Coolant leak after EGR cooler replace
Had my EGR cooler replaced 6 weeks back. Would have done it.myself if it wasn't a safety upgrade, rather than the BMW touch it.
Spotted a coolant leak from a gasket yesterday. The very reason why the cooler was replaced (could leak coolant) and they have caused it due to lack of diligence. Anyone else had this? |

Thats a nasty little leak. Looking at the points its bubbled through, i would hazard a guess that there's no gasket on that pipe connection at all - i.e. they forgot to replace it.

I'd also suggest missing gasket.
Strictly speaking that's an external coolant leak, whereas the recall is for the egr cooler leaking within the EGR exhaust flow, potentially introducing coolant into the intake.

The EGR valve has an 'O' ring around the neck before the flange.
When i took it in the tech said the valve was leaking above the flange area as there is fluid coming from higher up. Said it they could not have caused it. I couldn't argue with him, even though I think the forces induced by the new cooler have lead to the failure. When i replace the valve at the weekend I will not be happy if it has a damaged 'O' ring.... |

I finally found out where the leak was coming from....
I ended up replacing the EGR valve myself. Easy job. Had to get software to reset the valve adaptions. After that car was running perfect. In fact I would say even more responsive than before. Then a week later..... coolant level warning!!!! The leak was still there. This time I had the engine running and I traced it to the hose coming off the font valve connector. When I took it apart it was obvious what had caused it. The hose had been crushed by the valve connector onto the EGR cooler body.... So much so it had split it. Coolant was running around the valve and being boiled, spurting all over which you can see in the first pic. This means BMW did not replace the hose, but also the EGR cooler body must be higher than before and now crushing hose. When I took the hose off the connector was actually touching the EGR Cooler body, so no clearance for the hose!!!! I thought at that point taking it back to BMW, but I would rather have a proper job done so.... I tool the valve out, put it in i vice an carefully bent the connector so that there was enough clearance for the hose. Replaced the hose with some high spec fuel hose. Job done. No leaks. So BMW wanted to charge me nearly £300 for a new EGR valve and it just needed a £10 hose (in fact mine cost me nothing as I had some hose already). My low opinion of BMW has gone even lower now. Does beg the question though.... If this happened to mine, then has anyone else had a leak after having the EGR cooler replaced.... In fact i just found a thread about it.... lone behold BMW told them it need a new EGR valve also!!!! |

Hey did anyone have some feedback on this? I'm taking the car to the dealer on Tuesday. I bought the car privately a few months ago and have been topping up coolant. I realised the recall was done in march for the cooler. Do you think they will cover the damage? They said it's £50 for 30 mins inspection if they find fault is theirs they will fix it as good will.

I do not have any faith in the BMW dealers after being lied to about disc replacement requirements. A mistake is always possible but a blatant lie gets no second chance in my book. I have found my local indy to be far superior to deal with ... an honest appraisal, where i have confidence his suggestions main purpose is not pocket lining.
