2008 335xi vs 500lb Elk
During the second week of June I hit a 500lb female elk on the hwy at 65mph at night. By the time my headlights illuminated the elk and we saw the creature less than a second passed before striking the animal. I had no time to brake or swerve and hit the elk square in the body. The elk was perpendicular to the car. My two young boys were traveling with me and my 11yo was in the passenger front seat because he wanted to use the front seat heater. Amazingly no one was hurt. I had a small bump on my head which I think is from the detached front mirror. The airbags did not deploy because the frame/front bumper only struck the legs of the animal while the hood, windshield and roof took the brunt of the hit. I had an oem BMW roof rack with our three mountain bikes attached and all were ripped off by the elk and crushed by the animal. The elk died and the meat was already being harvested by the time my car was towed away. The Colorado State Patrol officer called CDOT to haul off the demolished bikes and rack. According to the tow truck operator his company gets called 3-4 times a month for auto vs animal accidents on that stretch of I-70 east of Evergreen.

Count your blessings. Glad no one was seriously injured. It's still a traumatic experience for everyone involved in the accident. May be prudent to keep a watchful eye on the kids as it probably takes time to get over the psychological shock.
They should probably increase the hunting season to thin our the over population in that area. Seems there is an over population of deers and moose through out the continent. |

That's very fortunate you and your children were OK. Kind of amazing too, considering it looks like the body of the elk hit the windshield, right at head/body level for you and your son.

If this was the E30 forum. The first 10 posts would have been more like; "When you part it, how much for the seats and passenger door?"
Kidding aside, glad you guys made it out cleanly.
