335D losing power high revs
Hi guys,
I’ve recently bought a 335D and it seems to be losing power past 3000rpm. It pulls fine off the line but as soon as it gets higher up in the rev range it just feels like it’s not pulling at all and losing boost. Its as if the big turbo is not doing anything. What can I check? I’ve already took the car to my local dealership and they thought it was the EGR valve. This was replaced but still the problem is there. Just thought I would ask here before I take it back Thanks all |

You need a good scan tool, for starters. Need to be able to log requested vs actual boost, fueling, etc., then go from there.
If there are any codes, a scan tool will reveal them. Look up BimmerLink.

The code I’m showing from my Bluetooth code reader is 244C00
Having a quick google around it seems to be that the requested boost pressure does not match the actual? Any ideas where to start looking with this one |

Cleared all codes and went for a run. Same symptoms with serious lack of power higher up in Rev range.
Got this one code when I got home: 27B800: Exhaust-gas pressure before turbocharger, plausibility: difference, measured from calculated exhaust-gas pressure, too high during charge-air pressure control, low-pressure stage The pressure difference between the measured and simulated pressure before the turbine exceeds the maximum permissible limit value. |

Has this car been remapped?
If not, I would check the turbos or turbo control

The car is not remapped. It's been back in to BMW today for the third time and now they are saying they have checked absolutely everything from the turbo actuators to the vacuum hosing etc and they cannot see anything wrong it it. Now they are saying they want to remove the turbocharger to test it and a new one fully fitted is £3700.
At this point it is not worth paying that amount for a new turbo... I'm struggling to believe that the large turbo is faulty I thought these turbos were very reliable. Only code I'm getting now btw is 244C00 Charging pressure control, control deviation: Charging pressure too low/positive control deviation |

It is booked in at a turbo specialist for a full diagnostic and if the turbo is at fault they will replace both turbos for £1700 total cost including labour.
Just surprised that the turbo could be at fault at just 60k miles on a 2016 car! |

Could just be the actuator(s) and not the turbine(s) but most places don't replace just the actuator.
Either way, let us know what the fix was.

I had exactly this problem and it was my actuator. Where are you based? Someone nearby may let you swap it over to try. It'd only three bolts and easily accessible

Both turbos fully reconditioned and still the problem persists. The issue is clearly not the turbos themselves but something around it.
Does anyone know of a guide with info on how to check the actuators? I would like to try checking myself |

Were the actuators not reconditioned along with the turbos ?
I've just had the single turbo for my 330d rebuilt and the actuator was serviced as part of the job. Apparently the worm gears (plastic) had worn, and although the actuator was working 'fine' these gears are replaced as a matter of course. As the problem persists on your car I'd book a detailed logging session on a rolling road with a good tuner that knows these engines well. Unicorn Motor Developments (Manchester) are well regarded, and it may be worth the 2.5 hour drive to tap into their experience.

Do you know anyone else with the same engine? To check check actuator all you need to do is remove the engine cover and the plastic intake pipe to rhe right of the oil cap and the actuator is easily accessible from there. Its held on by 3 bolts and looks similar to this. |

I’ve changed both the vacuum pressure converters and still have the same issue. Just bought a vacuum tester so will put that to some use hopefully. What’s the easiest way to gain access to the turbo set up on these? Access isn’t great just removing the intake pipe on the left as you look down into the engine. |

I swapped mine 435d over with my mates 335d and they are identical and easy enough to get at with a small ratchet. If need be I can take some photos this weekend when I'm back home? Or if your in the North I'd be happy to help out

Since it’s part of the turbo assembly I can’t seem to find a part number for it either |

Yeah I had the same problem trying to find the part myself I cant even find one on the part i ordered as the advert has expired. I'll take some photos at some point over the weekend. Surely there's someone with a X35d in the area who'd let you quickly swap the part over to see if it eliminates your issue.

It’s alright I found it. I was being completely stupid it’s right at the top of the engine just underneath the air intake pipe to left of oil cap.
Managed to get a video and when I rev the engine the actuator rod moves ok. Not sure if this proves anything though. |

From memory mine was still moving fine and I was told by 2 bmw techs it wasn't the issue. I did notice a clicking noise from the actuator when turning the engine off though.
After replacing various other parts which didn't solve the issue including a new DDE which wasn't cheap (because the actuator was DEFINITELY fine according to bmw) I swapped over the actuator with a friend and law and behold his car inherited my power loss and mine was fixed. I'm not saying this is definitely your issue but it's certainly the same symptoms I had so worth a shot if you can get someone local to let you try the swap. |
