NY shops required to purchase new inspection machine

I wonder if the new inspection machine will check the ECU/DME for OEM software or not. Just a thought. The message came up yesterday morning when I booted up the current machine in our shop.

Confirmed - next year any car in ny with a tune, regardless of readiness monitor status, will fail ny inspection. Also we will be required to do a 360* walk around the car with an inspection camera, and the catalytic converter must also be photographed for the inspection.

how will it know you're tuned? and also is this just any type of coding? like if you retrofit parts into your car that require coding is that going to flag the machine?

Same as California. It basically looks for an MD5 checksum. If it does not match an MD5 provided from the manufacturer as a factory flash, then it fails. California started doing this, this year.

This is tunes only. Coding is a non-issue

Yikes, I don't get why it would fail with a tune if CAT is still present. If the tune doesn't effect emissions it should be a non issue.

can't we just flash back to stock before the inspection?

Looks like they are getting serious short of bringing back the sniffer test for exhaust gas. The cat eye-check is legit but some high flow cats look normal. I wonder if they can't be challenged on the tune. What is next? Improper coding fails inspection too?

I second this, since most platforms makes a copy of the original tune and assuming it doesn't modify it, the MD5 checksum should match up. If that's the case then I would only see this problematic if they can sift through the log history to see how many flashes have been done against the DME similar to how BMW can already do so today.

The more concerning part is the photographing of the cat. Curious to see if they're going after the catless or if the high flow catted people like myself will fall into that category.

Forthose that cannot easily revert back to their stock tunes I can see it becoming problematic. Interesting to see NY becoming the second after CA with these kind of checks.

And now I wait patiently to see how folks plan to get around this one

Confirmed we will be checking, and failing vehicles for missing front plates, and modified exhaust systems. Aftermarket mufflers, or any modification to the stock exhaust system is an immediate failure.

Where is the proof of this? I saw the exhaust law for increasing fines of aftermarket exhausts or devices to make them louder.

The proof is I just told you, and by the end of next year you will see it. When I posted this, it was minutes after seeing the message come up on the current inspection machine.

Wow. Do they check for aftermarket LED bulbs in halogen headlights?

Why is this not being discussed more? This seems like huge news.

My question is -- will using a BMW M performance exhaust, will you still fail? Technically an OEM part, but also technically a modification since my car did not come with this out of the factory.

Can anyone clarify?

I'm in the same dilemma. When I bought my car last year the previous owner had the Dinan exhaust put on and traded it in with it on, not the stock one. Obviously I have to switch out the downpipe because of monitors but I don't have the stock exhaust and I really don't wanna spend the money on it for it to be on the car for not even 1 day.

The machine is not out yet. My friends have already been turned down for motorcycle inspections. Most stations have signs outside that say all slip on exhausts fail. The new machine will take affect on December 1st.

I just moved to NY from CT recently and NY seems a lot stricter. Are these new regs part of the 'emissions' inspection, or just the 'safety' inspection?
