Fuel gauge wrong

2014 320i. Filled up and it showed a quarter tank and 125 miles till empty. Thought maybe got shorted gas but just tried to fill it up and only took a gallon. Tank was full. Definitely reading wrong. Is there a fix?

The tank sensor may be bad. You need to get it tested.

If it is does the whole tank get replaced? Already replaced the tank once because you could smell gas.

Have a check engine light now. P144B. The fuel guage said 1/4 initially when it first happened but now reads full all the time. The car runs normally. I'm wondering if the the code is just related to the sensor not working? If that's the case I will just live with it because I don't want to have to put another gas tank in.
