Quarantine Project: AEM WMI

One good thing about quarantine, and that my job is still having us remote into work, is that I can leave the car gutted and slowly work towards a nice clean install (vs the starts job-gets late-panic sets in-must reassemble before work).

Running BM3 Stage 2, I always had a problem getting clean timing with CT 93 octane gas. Even running 93 on the 91 tune gave some crap timing. Heard from a friend that he went with WMI and his timings were spot on...so i figured I'd dive in.

First time ever doing WMI, and I gotta be honest, the F36 really makes it super easy to do a nice stealth install (especially if you have the bms tank). No cutting needed, and for the AT guys, no need to tear into the firewall grommet since we have a plug where typically the clutch lines run through.

What is the cost of this setup and the potential gain in performance?

Ugh you had to go there didn't you (i was trying to avoid thinking about my all in cost LOL)...

AEM WMI - 30-3302 Kit - $404 (ebay best offer, new)
BMS Stealth Tank - $229
AEM WMI Filter - 30-3003 - $31.65
SNOW Boost Juice (4 pack) - $46.59

Optional if you dont already have:
Stanless steel 1/8 NPT to 1/8 barb for boost reference
16 AWG wires to extend harness (you will need this if your running from glove box to trunk)
Add-a-fuse (you will need this to tap to IGN source for the ARM switch)

As far as performance - I personally didn't do it for that. I did it because our CT gas is iffy and I was getting some poor timing on the Stage 2 BM3 map. However, I suspect you should be able to run the e30 map with this, so there is added performance there.

The kit in-and-of itself wont give you added performance as is.

You wouldn't want to run the E30 map with pump gas and meth. You would just run a higher octane pump gas/race gas map (depending on how much meth % you are spraying and how much higher octane you can acheive).

The issue with running a E30 map for the purposes of targeting higher timing with pump gas + meth is that the E30 map is going to command more fuel from the DI on the assumption you are running ethanol. That is going to cause the car to run rich even before you account for the meth. Add the meth on top of that and fuel trims are going to be very negative and you are always going to have rich spots, especially on tip in before the O2 and STFTs can respond.

By chance, did you install a low level sensor with the BMS stealth tank? Specifically the Snow Perofrmance low level sensor?

If so, which tap size did you use for the hole?

For sure, this is good information, appreciate the insight. And I agree, my use of WMI wasn't really to push the limits of timing, but moreso to control the timing on a safe map for my fuel type - if that makes sense.

Honestly I didn't. I'm going to see how long a full tank lasts me and gauge how often to check. Certainly dont want to overheat the pump by running it dry, so that's my concern there. I dont mind spot checking it every other week or so (i do the same for my catch can so it will just become part of my 'routine')

Gotcha. You can probably run the 95 map without issue, especially if you have pump 93. I thought i saw someone the other day running a race gas map with 93 and WMI but would have to go back and look. You will basically need to just log it and see how timing looks. Running a low octane map would be the 'safest' but you might be leaving quite a bit of power on the table with a 91 map compare to a 95 map for example, assuming you can support the timing on the 95 map.

Funny, i had to actually google 95 octane gas ... all we got over here is 87/89/91/93 , e85 in the rarest of places lol
