F33 Harmon Kardon Tweeters on Base system
Hi, I have been searching today and struggled to find the answer.
Can someone tell me if the HK Tweeters that are available can connect to the standard Base system? I would like to purchase 2 and replace the blank covers in the doors and simply connect them to the existing wiring in the door itself. Is this that easy as plug and play? Thanks

I wanted to go for a standard look tbh.
They are about £120 off eBay, just wanted to take my blank covers off and fit those and plug in. I'll have a look at the ones you have mention. So is there a spare plug to connect to that's in the door card ready to go?

I'm 99% certain you can't connect them to the base system as the tweeter connects into the door speaker. The HK door speaker has 2 connectors for this reason and the base only having the 1 connector.
I may be wrong but going from what I've seen on the F30 speakers.

You can always tap into the wires, but being tweeters they may need an inline capacitor to cut out the low frequencies to prevent damage.
I’m sure it’s been talked on here in the past, might be worth a search…. |

Also the base system powers the speakers via the head unit so I’m not sure how they would even sound. They some very nice plug and play options from focal/audison/gladen which would be great sound upgrade for not to much. All would fit into original locations and you would need the hk covers to accommodate the tweeters. |

That's what is wanted to avoid was to buy the HK covers and bin the tweeters…
Looks like I have no option but to do that and upgrade.

AFAIK, the main door speakers (Mids) on the HK system provide & house the active crossover, which is needed for the connection to the tweeters... (Which I believe plug into the HK mids).
If you were just to tap into the connections of the 'standard' speaker, you're going to need some kind of inline crossover. Or you will just get distortion from the tweeters as the lower frequencies won't be filtered out. IMO & best guess of course...

I did this on a F335D a few years ago. As others have said there are plug & play kits. I used a Focal kit IFBMB-S (122603048243) which came with the wiring to plug the tweeter into the mid speaker. The kit has all you need, 2 Tweeters, 2 Mid speakers, removal tool and wiring. This upgrade made a huge difference to the sound. You will need to purchase the BMW trims separately though. If you pm me I will send you the details. I also upgraded the under seat subs.

I did this years ago on my F36, I did a detailed post about it with photos but can't find it anywhere.
It's really easy to do, apart from taking the door cars off, that was tough. I changed the speakers as well because as others have pointed out there is no option to attach the tweeters without tapping the wires. Honestly it's the best mod you can do to the base audio without going down a really expensive route. Adding tweeters is a night and day transformation to the sound. Highly recommended. |

Here's my 2 cents after I upgraded my base stereo (no amp) to H/K mids and tweeters...
Exactly as various people have stated before, quality of the sound is much better. However, after I was done with physical work and I tested the new sound, I also coded the head unit to "HIFI sound system" and I didn't like how that sounded - it lowered the overall volume a bit too much for my liking and kinda muted the highs as well. Granted, it was better than having no tweeters at all, but not as good as before the coding (to be fair, "good" here is very subjective and may be very inaccurate - probably is )... So I coded it back to stereo settings, but lowered the treble slider in iDrive to -2, and to me that sounds the best. Did anybody else come to the same conclusion? Also, are there any downsides (potentially damaging?) keeping the HU coded to default/stereo values with the added tweeters and HK mids, or is it preferred to keep it like that until I add the amp in the future? |

My friend actually did the upgrade with aliexpress parts and he was really happy. Personally, i think you could probably pick up legit, used parts maybe cheaper than £150 ish instead of these that are good quality fakes.
