Coding a 'beep' when locking the car?

It really annoys me that there is no audio confirmation when I lock the car. Am I doing something wrong? I have successfully coded various things and thought I read you could enable this. But looking at the coding reference guide I can't see it anywhere... I found the lines that change the number of flashes of the lights etc, but nothing to do with audible confirmations.

Is there a way to get the car to squawk when I lock it?

Garage List
The reason it's not there is probably because its illegal however others have coded it.

Audio confirmation on locking cars was outlawed in the UK ages ago because the bleeping and blipping can be bloody annoying for neighbours, especially when both my neighbours work very odd hours.

It can be done though - once activated in coding it makes the check box appear in the iDrive which you then have to go in and select so it's a two-stage process.

Ah, I didn't know it was illegal... I will look for the codes then. Purely for research purposes obviously.

The new Jag XF I just had on test lets out a single beep when I click twice to lock it (so the mirrors fold in). Are Jaaaaaaag breaking the law?! Interesting.

It is interesting - the C&U regulations regarding audio warnings are quite specific that this is not allowed.

My neighbours Merc ML gives a quick beep of the horn when he locks it, that's a 14 plate.

I have coded it on my car. One beep on lock, two on unlock, and it is quite muted, it doesn't use the horn. After you have coded it, you get an option in idrive to turn it on and off so if you don't want it you just set it to off.

Illegal? Could you get arrested for it?

As AndyTo says, Mercs still do it to. Though I believe it is a select-able option there. I guess that is where Jaguar are coming from, it is up to the user to disable an option that breaks the law. Just as it is up to the user not to press too hard on the accelerator. Maybe they feel their major markets are in countries where you can put your hand in your pants and still fell some cojones and are not subject to HSE tyranny?

I am not sure that it is illegal, too many cars and aftermarket alarms have it. It doesn't sound the horn, it is a fairly muted beep, just loud enough so you are sure the car has locked. I like it as I can lock the car as I walk away and be sure that it has locked. As it is a menu option you can also turn it on and off as you wish

Sorry, but why on earth would anyone want to code their car to beep when they lock it?

There is nothing more annoying than a neighbour coming home at midnight and "beeping" their car locked after they get out of it.

Great for the owner - annoying for anyone else in the vicinity.

^ exactly.

Regarding legality, the C&U regulations (unless recently changed) spell out that you can only have a traditional horn, an acoustic warning device for reversing, and an alarm mechanism that only sounds if triggered.

There's plenty of after-market alarms in exactly the same way as there are plenty of after-market HID headlamp kits. Not strictly legal for the C&U regulations but nothing to stop you fitting them.

In the case of manufacturers mentioned on here perhaps they can get round it by having the option set to off and if the user switches it on then that's down to them.

Its useful to know that your signal hasn't been jammed in a crowded car park and left insecure.
Yes I know that it's a simple task of physically checking, but hey,we're all different!

Precisely. It doesn't blare out Dixie on the horn. In fact it doesn't use the horn, it literally emits a small 'beep' from some other source.

Anyways, a little coding and there it is.

This.

I didn't realise the alarm beeping had been legislated against but thinking about it you don't hear it at all! Don't quite understand the benefit either, my car has a flashing red light on when it's locked. Pretty hard to miss really.
