BMW first with new jam-busting technology: Real Time Traffic Information (RTTI)
BIMMERPOST NEWS BMW first with new jam-busting technology: Real Time Traffic Information (RTTI) 10.10.2011 BMW drivers are the first in the world to benefit from an advanced traffic information system giving fast, accurate and reliable data about road conditions on their journeys. Real Time Traffic Information (RTTI) is an enhanced BMW ConnectedDrive feature designed to increase the comfort and peace of mind of BMW owners. The system is available on all new BMW models and comes at no additional cost when customers order the BMW Professional navigation system and Bluetooth telephone preparation with telematics. As a further benefit, BMW drivers can also view RTTI remotely when planning their routes within their BMW Routes website. This portal can be accessed by any internet-enabled device. Information updated every three minutes For many years BMW ConnectedDrive technology has pioneered the automotive industry, establishing benchmark solutions that intelligently link the driver and the vehicle with the outside world. Until now owners have had to rely on the radio-based Traffic Message Channel (TMC) for information on traffic disruptions. This information is not always fast or accurate enough to help steer clear of delays ahead. RTTI now provides a precise account of current traffic situations in real time allowing the driver to relax in the knowledge that the most time efficient route is being taken. The new system provides a premium alternative to TMC as the information presented is based on significantly greater sources of data. It combines TPEG (Transport Protocol Expert Group) with the GSM cellular network. By integrating this data with the SIM card built into the vehicle, traffic information can be transmitted in real time delivering unique dependability and accuracy. Drivers are better informed Traffic information is presented on the Navigation map by using an easily interpreted colour-coding system indicating how well traffic is flowing. The system provides superior accuracy as road networks can be divided into distances as short as 500m and the information is automatically updated every 3 minutes allowing the driver to actively monitor whether the traffic situation is improving or worsening. Furthermore, when the destination guidance is active the system also monitors traffic flow away from the predetermined route to calculate which route is the most time efficient and can actually recommend for or against alternatives. This information provides the driver with the knowledge and option of accepting the traffic jam ahead if the alternative routes offer no time saving benefits. It also ensures that if the system diverts the driver from congested roads they are not directed into heavier traffic. Coverage includes all major road networks and motorways in the UK as well as pan-European networks for journeys abroad [BIMMERPOST note: will roll out to the US / North America at a later date]. |

This nav system really is pretty shitty. The more I use it, the more I encounter issues. Why can I speak into my Android phone using Google maps and have the address come up first time, every time, but the BMW system is in a different state, can't figure out the zip, leaves off the address once it figures out the street, etc? Bollocks. And instead of figuring out how to route you around traffic, maybe they should update the US maps to figure out how to route you there in the freaking first place? Instead of making you do 6 u turns, etc. |

Agreed! I have nav prof. and I still use my tomtom. I have a us spec car in germany, so the traffic tmc does not work, only on my tomtom. I end up using both just to compare, and never has bmw nav been better at guiding me than tomtom regardless of traffic. I got stuck yesterday in the middle of a pedestrian zone bacause I said what the hell, let me trust BMW nav. Never again!

Here is the PDF that was distributed to UK dealers.
The system is pretty good and works well in my 730d. Thankfully my car was build on week 36 and has the mod but as the PDF states it is not retrofittable. |

I just use my smart phone... google maps ftw.
I just got my nav for the hump... and yes BMW is way behind the competition. Try out the 2004 Acura TL's nav. Their 7 year old technology is better than the LCI's nav functions.

Got 2010 iDrive and nav. Mine works incredibly well with turn by turn directions, destinations sent from Google Maps, etc real-time traffic info, and a lot more, eg voice commands for new destination, use it every day and love it. Always right on target. Are you guys using the BMW portable nav?

my old school nav works just fine for directions, but i always use gmaps for traffic
i think the biggest thing to recognize with traffic info in general is that there will almost always be a lag. if it's 5pm and your traffic info shows a slight delay, it's probably more like a moderate delay. if it's 7pm and you're still seeing red on gmaps, it's probably on the way down to yellow

The Real Time Traffic Information (RTTI) is something new for EU/Germany. However, it has been used in the states for years now. Its something that is only new for the Germa market.

Agreed. I had a 2007 Honda Accord and the Nav was much better than on my 2011 BMW. The BMW gives you the worst route possible and is late on telling you when to turn.

That is definitely an issue of user error. The BMW nav notifies you a mile or more before you need to turn, and then breaks it down into feet before you actually reach the turn. Maybe you aren't listening attentively?!!?? |

You are starting to worry me. I have a 2006 Accord, and the latest White disc 2011 update. The directions are pretty good, but the graphics are weak, and there is zero traffic info. Was hoping my '12 E92 was going to be a step up.
