2014 320xi now at 101k miles purchased new. Coil 3 died out during spark plug change. Everything running smoothly otherwise. They were out of stock on 3 more coils that I plan to replace in the upcoming weeks. This way I have a new set of 4.
I found that most failures are caused by the plug swaps

There was also a link somewhere in this forum where you can buy them MUCH cheaper than the BMW extortion prices...

$1400 to buy it

I did a bunch of stuff at once so hard to say how long it took. Did turbo, motor mounts, inlet elbow, springs, struts, and camber plates in a weekend.

If I had to guess, maybe 8-10 hours to do just the turbo R&R.

At ~$150/hr - that's $1500 in labor, give or take.... So maybe $3K total?

2015 335i Msport Bought 4/2018 CPO at 37,000, currently at 80,600 miles.
Lots of oil changes... every 5,000 with Castrol 0W40 Euro.
Regular brake fluid flushes, air filters, several sets of Michelin's, BMW alignments, tensioner, belt and idler at 50,000, transmission flushed at 60,000, plugs at 60,000.

Issues: Drivers side low tone horn failed twice.
Expansion tank hose cracked (self inflicted, pressed on it when changing plugs)
Valve cover gasket leak 65,000 (diy'd)
Radio select buttons cracked, filled in with a Sharpie, seems to camouflage it.
Rear parking brake cable bracket broke, (rattling sound from parking brake hitting driveshaft) fixed, diy.
Oil pan gasket just starting to weep very slightly.

2013 335i 90k
Purchased used in 2015 with 39k, then purchased BMW Gold warranty 5 years or 100k miles

Charge pipe - 45k, warranty
Spark Plugs - 65k, DIY
Battery 78k - DIY, plus dealer coding
AC Compressor - 80k, warranty
Rear brakes; rotors and pads - 82k, DIY
Charge pipe - 85k, warranty
Motor mounts are bad - haven't replaced yet, need to find an indy

Rear trunk tail light plastic lever broke, which made it a little loose. I was about to order a replacement when someone hit my bumper at low speed. I mentioned to the BMW body shop that my tail light was loose and they glued it in place saving me from ordering a new one.

Otherwise, just new summer tires yearly, and oil changes every 7500 miles. Currently deciding if I'm going to keep it past this May when my warranty expires. The car has been excellent but I'm thinking about an SUV and/or maybe something a little bigger as the getting in and out of the car gets old sometimes.

I HATE the new 3/4 series , so if I stay BMW it will be an X3 or 5 series.

my 2012 328i (born February 14, 2012 in Munich) at 155,000km engine still running strong... no chain breakage, yet

new issues cropped up:
--two of my programmable buttons have a small crack in the center. Crap plastics for sure.
--my eight year old battery seems to be going strong, but I get occasional "charge battery" warning and I assume it's on it's way out.
--my headlight lenses are starting to very slightly fogged-up (on the inside) likely due to early stages of oxidation!

To date, major services have included (all after 110,000 km):

--replaced driver's side mirror assembly as the motor gave up it's ghost
--replaced low/high tone horns, as they died around the same time as my mirror motor
--all new OEM brakes, rotors and senors
--all new OEM suspension, though I kept the front springs, just replaced the struts, mounts, etc.
--new thermostat
--replaced vacuum hose that controls fuel gas emissions
--a thick rubber sticker to cover the cracks in my front seat, in the thin vinyl strip just above the seat controls. Of course, the rest of the leather is just fine.
--resprayed front bumper to address highway debris blasting effect--looks perfect.

Still to do:
--needs new tires
--I want to replace my aging rims with something gloss black*

*However, I still worry about the longevity of my N20 engine. One dealer told me I have a slight "whine" and that my oil chain is stretched. Another dealer did a borescope inspection of the engine, guides and chain and their opinion is that everything is normal. At this stage, I am not paying out of pocket to replace the chain. I will roll the dice. BTW, I don't hear any whine noises.

Uh, the vast majority of the items listed here are standard wear items on any car. If you can't afford to do the brakes, bushings, struts, motor mounts, etc on a BMW, then maybe look for a car where parts are cheaper. If you follow BMW's maintenance schedule, you deserve whatever you get. Change the oil @ 5k and trans fluid at 40k-50k and you'll have far fewer issues.

Every car made is going to need the following by 100k:
Timing belt, serpentine belt, tensioner, water pump, thermostat, all suspension bushings, struts/shocks, motor mounts, trans mounts, diff bushing or mount, wheel bearings and seals, brakes (including rotors and electronic wear indicators), lots of fluid changes, transmission filter (which includes the pan), tires, spark plugs, coil(s), battery and a few others.

Most cars will also require the following:
Ac compressor, evaporator, condenser, radiator, power steering pump, expansion tank, lots of underhood vacuum lines, coolant hoses, rubber brake lines, oil pan gaskets, diff gaskets and seals, and some other doodads.

Cars are not made to last forever and things will break. It's wise to allocate at least $2k year in annual maintenance. If you don't spend it, add whats left to the following year's $2k, and so forth.

Looking at the lists people have posted, the only things that I see that are troubling are the well known timing chain and guide problems with the N20 engine. Otherwise, there's nothing abnormal here outside of the prices for BMW parts.

If you can't afford the maintenance, you can't afford the car.

I agree 100% I just hope the timing/oil chain issue isn't a guarantee for all pre-2015 N20 engines. I suspect there's more than just poorly designed parts at play, and that maintenance and use are also a factor.

The only reason timing chains stretch is due to wear between the rollers and the chain-links. This increases the overall length of the chain (stretch). The biggest contributor to chain stretch is OCI's that are too long coupled with using the wrong oil. The second biggest contributor is too much pressure on the tensioner, which puts too much pressure on the guide, which wears out the guides and wears the chain. The most common reason for too much pressure in the tensioner is oil viscosity that is too high. Oil increases in viscosity over time due to oxidization and the molecules join together. Some oils (M1) can shear down to a lower viscosity over time, but eventually even those oils will start to swing in the opposite direction.

In short, use synthetic oil to slow down viscosity changes and decrease wear, use the correct viscosity for the ambient temperature and driving style, and change it every 5k. Cheap insurance. I'm not suggesting that doing this will eliminate the problems with the N20 chain and guides, but it sure as hell can't hurt.

SPOT ON!!!! The prices of the parts arent even that bad, They are no different than my wifes basic VW Passat, Esp when you have companys that will sell you OEM parts like FCP Euro with a lifetime guarantee down to sending your used oil back for a refund.. My only worry with this car at all is the chain/pump whine I have but my chains are fine and once warmed up car sounds fine...

Im at 106k miles on my N20 and car runs and looks like new outside of the small pump whine. Cars need maintenance ( all cars, this car has been dead reliable ).

Just change your oil every 6500 miles or so with good oil like LiquiMoly thats the right spec for your motor.

Estoril Blue with Dakota Red Leather

- bought CPO with 23k in Jan 2017

- after 3 years of hard driving currently sits at 115k

- fuel pump replaced under recall at 40k miles (did not fail)

- oil changes every 8k miles (DIY Mobil 1 0W-40)

- only replaced brake pads and spark plugs. Did a tranny and brake fluid flush

- only thing that went wrong was the expansion tank hose burst around 110k miles ($70, 10 min DIY fix)

Really can't complain about the reliability of this car. Might just have the highest mileage f30 soon with my 100 mile daily round trip to work

Yikes! You might catch up to me soon. I'm about to break 130k miles. Bought it at around 51k miles 3 years ago. Was at 72 miles a day round trip to-from work but now my commute is about 25 miles round trip.

I've done pretty much the same maintenance items, plus oil filter housing, oil cooler, and valve cover gaskets. Also replaced the serpentine belt, tensioner, and idler pulley. My water pump is still working, but I expect I'll probably change it within a year. Koni sport yellow shocks in the back, stock up front; might replace all dampers with Bilstein B8s once the fronts are completely shot.

UK 2010 320d E91 have owned for 8 years; now on 223,000 miles . Manual box, Still on original clutch and exhaust. Engine untouched apart from fluids and filters. Cannot fault this car in any way. Needed both rear wheel bearings recently but thats been about it.

Have recently bought an 2014 F31 320d msport with 51,000 ..... but am still using the E91 as my daily driver as the F31 feels big fat and ponderous in comparison. Need to sell one of them though!

The E30 was replaced by an E36 325tds which was replaced by a E46 320d touring which was replaced by an E91 320d . Then my F31 320d msport arrived ..... but i'm still driving my E91.....and ignoring the F31!!!

Y'all weak.

bought mine at 31.5k miles, I'm currently sitting at 147.5k miles, bought mine September 2015.

I've changed valvetronic servomotor, two bushings, one thermostat, 2 OFHG, one tensioner and belt, one front crank seal.

I would say 80k miles are with PS2 installed, 30k was FBO stock turbo.

I go lapping every summer with it as well
