I'm having an issue with my transmission on my 340 and I can't seem to find anyone else with the same problem. When slowing down the transmission shifts into 1st gear and switches from automatic to manual. In other words, when slowing down in automatic the transmission goes from whatever gear it is in to M1. After about 10 seconds it will change back to automatic on its own. Fortunately it happens intermittently and mostly at slow speeds, but a week or so ago it went into M1 at 50 mph on an off ramp and i nearly lost control. The dealership says they aren't sure what the problem is and of course it doesn't happen when they drive it. Has anyone else had a similar problem?

Whine (Turbo?) at 1500-2000 RPM with and without load

Hi Folks,

I want to see if anyone has a slight engine “whine” while both accelerating or decelerating within 1500 and 2000 RPMs with their B58 engine. It happens when parked or while driving. I can’t hear it much at idle or above 2000 as other noises drown it out.

I had my wife rev the engine while I listened and it seemed to emanate from around the exhausts headers region, leading me to think it might be the turbo. Are turbos supposed to have a slight whine?

I brought it to the attention of my dealer who thinks it’s nothing but did say they heard it as being “louder” than another B58. They had disconnected the alternator thinking it was a tensioner/bearing, which some engines had issues with based on an internal memo.

I notice the noise when I’m driving in Sport Mode more as it seems to let the engine hang around 1800 to 2000 RPMs. It happens whether the engine is hot or cold.

Thanks in advance!

Also just got service done at Open Road!

In the words of the SA, "The turbo just disintegrated."

It popped merging onto the highway. Lost all boost. Limped it home. First thing in the morning, pulled out the JB4 and AP intake. BMW roadside came and picked it up. New turbo covered under warranty. I was on map 3 (+6 psi, 93 octane).

I have the tune back in currently, but only map 2 for now (+4, 91-93 octane).

Was originally thinking about a downpipe, but it looks like I'm going to be waiting for the warranty to end first ...

What year is your car and mileage?
Interesting this might be the first blown turbo at least from what I’ve read and it’s most likely a defect itself doubt 3-4 psi would stress the turbo.

Wow, blown turbo's are rare at that level from what I've gathered. I'm surprised...

Had almost the same issue. New turbo under warranty as well. Jb4 map 3. Another poster is having issues on Jb4 map 3 as well. I'm seeing a trend here.

Mine was super smoky. Like so smoky that the neighbor came over to tell me I needed a head gasket. Didn't know what a turbo was. So, yeah. Oil was getting through.

Also a bunch of other stuff had to be cleaned in the aftermath. Ended up with a new valve cover, new injector seals, cleaned intake manifold, etc. I can post the service order if anyone is curious.

Here you go! They also did an oil change (the car was asking for it even though it wasn't due for another 1700 miles) and cabin filters.

Most of the blown turbo reports look like 2016s? Maybe issues with the initial batches?

They're also naturally the ones with the highest mileage. Time will tell.

I mean, you're not wrong, but no issues with my 50k mile '17. Stock w/ MPPSK, so not as much load on the turbo as a JB4/tuned car, but still, I don't drive it like it's slow.
