328d - Benefits to Carly

I have been reading more and more about the Carly app. Seems like a very handy tool for BMW owners. Curious how many of us diesel guys out there have it and use it? Can you monitor if your car is completing regeneration? If so it might be a handy tool to help prevent/delay DPF replacement? Any major benefits from the tool I am missing?

I just went out of warranty and am also considering the Carly app. I know it can do battery registering (for an added one time fee), but am also interested in the other benefits.

What can Carly do that BimmerCode cannot?

Appreciate the responses. Can someone provide specifics as to why one platform is better than the other?

I do not have experience with Carly but I can say that BimmerCode has never let me down and does offer a fair amount of 'popular' coding choices in a very simple to use and appealing interface.

Also purchase BimmerLink (same author) and you'll have a full suite of customization options and readable data for/from your Bimmer. All you need in addition is a Vgate iCar3 WiFi ($15) and you are good to go.

Side note: There is also a Pro Mode included with BimmerCode that allows for more in depth coding. Ive never needed to use it personally (yet).

As far as I'm aware, BimmerCode doesn't have functions for DPF regeneration and battery registration. For me, for these 2 features alone, Carly might be worth paying extra, that's why I'm considering buying it instead of BimmerCode. I haven't used any of the apps, I'm also researching them, so if anyone knows otherwise, any info would be helpful.

That is a good point for Diesel owners. This is the first "major difference" that would sway users one way or the other... that Ive heard of anyway.

Anyone know of any others?

I just ordered the Carly Gen2 adapter. I might do some coding, but my main desire is to have diagnostics as well as DPF, service, and battery reset capabilities. My understanding is that bimmercode cannot do these things and is only for coding....

Plus, I got a check engine light driving home yesterday and am hoping Carly can help diagnose and or clear what the issue is. 57,000 miles.

Question for the Carly people. How is the fault code reader on this? I've been looking at other non-app code readers (Peake type) and would like to just get an app if possible. are there any issues with pulling different codes than the stand alone readers or not being able to reset any lights/maint reminders?

I'm not all too interested in the coding part, more code read/reset

Frankly, for reading codes, registering battery, and performing maintenance/repairs, I would download ISTA-D. It is a large piece of software that is torrent-hosted, but it is an all around great piece of software that dealers use to read and clear codes, and to perform maintenance and repair work. The software takes you step by step for checking procedures for certain codes. And it is free. All you need is a cable, ENET cable runs $20 online.

I like the ISTA-D recommendation, unfortunately I have not seen definitively if it is MAC compatible, I have a MacBook Air. I've searched but can't find anyone running it within the past few years.

Very interested in that. Wish I could just buy a laptop with the software already loaded and ready to go. I had a heck of a time downloading and running a similar volvo software for my Volvo when I had it.
