FAQ

Do I need to upgrade my charge pipe before tuning?
It is not needed for most setups. Stock charge pipes have been tested to over 600whp. Big turbo kits come with their own aluminum charge pipes for peace of mind. Otherwise, you can do it for looks and/or ease of adding a meth injection system.

Do I need to upgrade my intercooler before tuning?
Our cars have an air-to-water intercooler that is integrated in the manifold. This, again, has been tested to over 600whp. Radiator upgrades are available but only really needed for track duty. Daily driving, 1/4 mile, highway pulls, etc. tend to not need it. Your best indicator will be logging IATs while racing to see if the system is getting heat soaked.

When is an upgraded fuel pump needed?
HPFP hits it's limit around 450whp. This can be reached easily with a downpipe and ethanol blend. If your logs show fuel pressure dropping at peak boost, then it's time to upgrade the fuel pump. More details on fuel pump options here:
Official B58 HPFP Options Thread
UPDATE: Tuners have released OTS maps that take advantage of HPFP upgrades. If you want to run a "Stage 2+" map, you need an upgraded HPFP.

When is an upgraded clutch needed?
The 6MT clutch is good for ~450 ft-lbs. This can be reached easily with a downpipe and ethanol blend. If you experience clutch slip, you can upgrade to the OEM clutch from an E90 335is/F10 550i for a cheap and easy to drive upgrade that will hold 500-600 ft lbs. For higher power applications, look into aftermarket options.

I am running bootmod3 stage 1 and i like it so far. I switched to the OTS e30 map and realized I was starting from scratch again, so that + my general curiosity kicked off the idea for this thread. I have to run some logs to see what the differences are from the 93 map I was running originally. But it would ve nice to know what to expect without running logs on the street.

@kern417, what do you mean here?

"3. Floor it (8AT Users: Don't press the kickdown under the pedal)"

Are you referring to simply running in manual shift mode?

yup pretty much.

so go to m4 2500 rpm press gas pedal all the way down just before it clicks so it dosent downshift into second on its own.

unless you have xhp then you can disable kickdown

Yep, I'm specifically referring to the "click." If you floor it, you can feel a second click underneath the pedal depending on how far you push down. That's the kickdown switch, and is the difference between accelerating in gear vs. the car down shifting for fastest acceleration. If you hit the kickdown switch, the car may downshift to 3rd/2nd. You want it to stay in the same gear for the whole pull.

The only experience I have with logging (previous instructions by Terry Burger) is using M4 which indeed will not trigger the kickdown.

I hang on every word at face value, so I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing anything.

Good idea for a thread.

At what RPM are these logs you posted below?

Redline. They all progress graduallly from 3k-7k. AFR starts in the 14s and drops as RPMs rise, and ignition timing increases as RPMs rise.

Do you think it would be more helpful to post that kind of info? Without a screenshot of a full map editor, it would be hard to illustrate, so I just posted peak values.

Yes definitely let's stick to a certain RPM close to redline like 6500 ?

Here's mine at 6500 RPM

Car: 340i MPPSK, no other mods.
Fuel used: less than 91 Octane
Ambient Temp: 100F

Manifold Temp: 110F
Boost: 14 PSI
AFR: 12.74
Timing: 8.5 degrees
Knock Delta: -0.1

Low Octane effecting timing badly.

You guys should add what gear you are providing log info for, 3rd vs 4th will show different values at the same rpm.

Why would it? I want to focus on peak values but can add more detail across the rev range if it makes sense. But I don't have any differences between logging in 3rd gear and 4th gear other than the amount of time/data points across the log.

4th gear is recommended with DSC off.

I guess engine load is different in each gear ? MHD recommend 4th gear with DSC off.

Load is different and therefore so will boost or timing.

I guess with these logs a good tuner can estimate how much power the engine produce.

mine at 6500 RPM :

Car: 340xi, software tune by me only.
Fuel used: 98RON.
Ambient Temp: 20 degrees of Celcius
IAT : 32 degrees of Celcius
Boost: 17.7 PSI
AFR: 12.6
Timing: 7.8 degrees

I would recommend to upload data from 6000-6300rpm range as most B58's make max power there.

Not doubting your comments but most b58s dynos I saw power peaking around 6500 RPM

https://www.google.com/search?q=b58+...ih=945#imgrc=_

Also your timing advance is quite low I guess with a bit less boost or higher octane you will get better timing and more power.

That's what happened to me when I increased the boost timing retarded which resulted to lower top end power.

I learned that more boost not always equal more power, Ignition timing is the key, If we don't get a good combustion then the extra boost is useless.

Also how do you make your own tune ? I wish I could do that.
