Got call from dealer "there are some cracking deals"...

Listened to his sales patter and asked him to cost out a couple of cars for my wife - 4 years. / 8k miler per annum.

1) X3 20i M Sport with pro pack - £559 deposit + £559 per month

2) X3 30E M Sport with pro pack - £3k deposit + £629 per month

Sounds like a great deal! A X3 20i for more than I am paying for my M40i!

Changed times!

If I'm not mistaken more expensive than the X3M deal last year!? Ridiculous prices. Do they even want to sell any cars?

I think you're right! I daresay there might still be a few good buys on cars in stock that a dealer needs to shift but in general the offers on factory order BMW's seem pretty poor compared to where they were 12 months ago.

The question is whether this is temporary or whether the much lower discounts from list will become the new norm; I'm inclined to the former but who knows how things will look when we finally emerge from these crazy times?

The X3 M40i is still available for forces / NHS / teachers / IAM at £582 on a 1+47 PCP with 8k miles. Not as good as a year ago but not too bad in the current climate

https://www.bmw-ukforces.co.uk/pcp-c...op-279159-4326

But the really good deal is the X5 45e at £633 on a 1+47 lease (lower than your dealer’s X3 30e PCP quote!)

Those moving out of London pushing prices up, I know of 5 couples who have moved to Norfolk since Covid, house price here up 10% or more easily on bigger houses, smaller ones not so sure.

I am trying to sell a property at the moment and my mate who is an agent said that the last few months have been mental, prices up loads sold, but just as they are about to complete lenders pulling out.

Reckons he had around 60% of the sales collapse in January as lenders getting itchy. Many now saying they want to see 6 months of wages when they come out of furlough.

Only those with 40% deposits or who can prove Covid has not affected them financially seem to be OK.

I spoke to a broker today, I enquired about borrowing £150k on a £550k property while keeping my other place, which we would rent (£380k with £210k mortgage on it), and he said even that may be a push at the moment.

They are starting to tighten up big time.

Used car prices through the roof, only the over priced ones left on the market, some F31s have been for sale for months and months now.

The knock on is they don't need to do such good deals on new, they are nearly as cheap on finance as used ones.
Strange times.

No, but the new Rules Of Origin probably will do.

This is happening in the EU to from July, but we have had a 6 month headstart.

A certain percentage has to be from trading partners, ie. you can't have a car which has 90% of its parts from outside and put it together in a factory in Europe and say it is European.

I'm in footwear, we get 2 tariffs, 3% for parts imported and 12% for a finished shoe.
For years we have got the factories in say India to make the whole shoe but not attach the sole or insole, stick that back on in Northampton and call it Made In England and only only pay the 3% tariff.

The whole of Europe has had enough of this and is putting a stop to it, the UK simply started already because it seemed silly not to change when we left the EU rather than change the rules again in 6 months.

We're in a similar situation with a 2.2% tariff to export to EU unless >50% of parts in the whole assembly are of UK origin.

Regarding cars - say BMW - I wonder what % of parts are from outside EU? I'd imagine all the infotainment and control electronics are from the Far East but as a cost percentage I'm guessing they're still comfortably "Product of the EU" and not subject to tariff (?)

Rules of Origin is a EU thing being brought in, starting in July 2021.

Just that the UK started, along with the new tax rules (sub €150 added to sale) on January 1st as it seemed silly to put in provisional rules and then change again in July.

This was a rule brought in because so many 'manufacturers' import all the parts from the Far East, put a couple of screws in and then sell as Made in EU and don't pay the proper taxes.
This is not a Brexit thing, this was the EU getting pissed off that China was dominating the market and not paying the tariffs they should be.
The UK have just decided to keep it going.

One of my German shirt factories are seriously pissed off as they moved from Tunisia, where a free trade deal has been done, to China, they are getting hit with 12% tariffs and they are only 3 years into the 20 years needed to pay for the factories they have built.
They have said that they feel they may have to move production back to Germany to be able to compete.

Errr, yeah.....I think that is the fucking point!

That sounds like Barker's MO to me... got any forum discounts if so
Haven't made my yearly trip to the Northampton shops for a while now. EG was definitely a favourite factory outlet to visit and Barker's selection was huge!

Love a good factory shop. We’ve got the John Smedley one at their mill not too far from us. Jumpers for around £35 instead of well over a hundred.

Once a year they do a bigger event and open up a hall in the mill where they sell them 4 for £100. Always worth a visit. And always surprised to see Japanese tourists turning up in hire cars in the Peaks just for that event.

Not been to Northampton shopping, but looks like loads of factory outlets there.

Exactly this! When I was in the Lobb store the assistant was telling me about how they'll (sometimes) fly in specifically for that reason, then spend hours and hours in the store and just end up picking out the most standard pair of black Oxfords 😂

Given how little I'm having to wear proper shoes these days I expect what I've got will last the rest of my working life.

Sales of proper shoes must have taken a bit with so many white collar folk working from home?

Hi sir, pay full list price for this car and we will give you enough cash back to buy a big bar of dairy milk.

Seriously though someone has given the ok for that to be published, how would that not be ridiculed.
