N47 vs B47

About to buy a 2015 lci 320d but when I did an HPI check I noticed the engine code N47N20o1
I was under the impression all Lci’s had the newer modular engines.

Coming from petrol engines, specifically 320i B engine,I’m worried it may be too noisy. Is the B engine much quieter?
Thanks

I bought a 320i B48, registered December 2015. From what I recall, the LCI came out that year, but there were still loads of non LCI cars that were already built and were in the UK and yet to be registeted. If it's not an LCI car it won't have all the other modifications either, and will be worth less.

Personally, unless it is an exceptionally good deal I would look elsewhere and get the newer modular engine, lights, interior trim, updated suspension and steering, to name some of those LCI upgrades.

It is an lci car.I’m a tad confused as I did quick free HPi checks on other lci cars so see if it mentions the engine code but doenst. It only tells you the power output, which most seem to match 188hp and 140kw even a 2017 shadow edition.I did another 2016 lci which must have had an older engine as that mentioned 181bhp.
So very confused

Can you look here to see what engine it says;
https://www.mdecoder.com/

My current car shows the engine listed.

Hpi check only gave me the last 4 digits of the vin.
The hpi records engine code as
N47N2o1
188hp
140kw

All other newer 320d cars I’ve looked at on auto trader and did a quick check came back as same power output.Obviously without paying for full HPi I can’t check exact engine code.

Can you get the last 7 vin characters. If you can do that then a VIN decoder will tell you the exact build details.

I’m going to message the seller today for the vin.I did another basic HPi check on it and that one said the B engine! Looks like some HPi companies don’t have the correct details about the car.
Guess the vin is the only way of knowing

Simple check for N47 Vs B47 on the 320d if it's still stock, how many exhaust tail pipes does it have? If 2 then it's a B47.

Garage List
N47 was 181hp/280lbft and B47 was 188hp/295lbft.

I think.

I did think that actually but wasn’t sure if it applied to diesels.
Yep it has two.Should be all good.
Question is,can I live with the diesel noise after always having petrols. My brother has an N47 and sounds like a tractor compared to my 320i

I wouldn't think that BMW would fit an old engine to an LCI car, that wouldn't happen. If it has all the other LCI bits, it must have a B series engine, but see if you can get the chassis number for the Decoder check. Isn't the chassis number on the HPI check?

Well yeah that’s what I thought.I only doubted it when the HPi check mentioned the N47 engine. It also followed on the code with N20 (N47N2001) which as far as I have discovered, the ‘N’ part of the code doesn’t even exist. Also only mentions the last 4 digits on the vin.Don’t think I’ll be using total car check again for HPi.
Still waiting for the vin from seller but I’m sure like you’ve all mentioned,it will be the B engine.

The 4 pot diesels sound a bit tractor-like when cold and idling but once on the move they are refined.

Most likely a B47 if it has a twin exhaust.

When I put my reg in here, it gives me the engine code.

I’d avoid the N47; mine sounded like a cement mixer full of bricks.

Rolling down a gravel path.

Mine wasn't that bad, but only because it got a new bottom end and timing chain replacement courtesy of the BMW warranty.
