Me, too! Will clean it off & paint the hubs with the fall tire rotation.

Reviving an old thread.....
My 3 series hubs look very similar to the one in the picture... I'm looking to clean and paint them again next week when I rotate to my winter tires.... Has anyone done the strip/clean and painting of a rusted hub? Any dos/donts through peoples experiences? Recommendations for paint? |

Use plumber's sandpaper to remove the rust, caliper paint to paint the hub. Simple. I use Plastikoat caliper paint for my calipers and hubs.

Its not unusual...and the rust isn't deep. Very superficial. Steel Wool 0001 works well. Just go easy. Should clean nicely.

I just used normal sand paper, I believe 250 grit. Then sprayed with brake cleaner. It smoothed out pretty nice. Sprayed 3 coats of the caliper paint. Take your time masking it. 1 can is plenty enough, still have lots left.

Normal sandpaper will work, but it's a lot more work. Plumber's sand paper is about an inch wide and comes in a long roll, so you can sand a hub with the same ease as buffing your shoes with a towel.

I swapped mine out for some Pagid discs and pads. Don't know why the BMW ones are so bad, you don't see that level of rust with other manufacturers. [IMG][/IMG] |

FWIW, I bought Zimmerman coated rotors for the rear on my 335. They held up a bit better but than the originals, but are starting to oxidize a bit now. I think Viper901 has the best fix. The black really cleans up the look.

If anything my rotors are better than those I've had in the past. Three years in and I only bothered to touch them up as I was painting the calipers anyway, otherwise I'd have waited another year.

ceramic or metallic pads??
Quote:
I know the original Non-M are ceramic,,, and ceramic brakes owing to their non metallic compound do not cause rust,, on the contrary the metallic brakes found in most "performance" brakes tend to make the rotors rust,,, I'm no expert so my info could be in accurate so any one please correct me if I'm wrong ,,, I bought a Hawk HPS5.0 rear brakes and I'm afraid of installing them ,,, because I've discovered that Hawk make ceramic ones ,, and those are metallic ,, ceramic are much softer on the rotors |
