To extend warranty or not?

My car is coming up to 3 years old (28,000 miles) and I have now had the letter to extend my BMW warranty. Three levels of cover to choose. Got a quote from the middle level of cover with max excess of £250. £303 per year or £37 per month.

I have never been one to buy extended warranties or over insure stuff but it has got me thinking should something major go wrong it could run into thousands.

Hmm ??

Not a lot of money compared to repair bills on modern cars if something goes wrong

I would reduce the excess to a lower amount.

I'm thinking of going comp cover with £100 excess at £57 per month. Gotta decide before 24th November.

With your name I would have thought it was a no-brainer?

If something went wrong on my car I wouldn't mind paying up to about £750, but if it got into thousands then that would sting a little. If I could have more excess I would, and reduce the annual figure.

Generally insurance companies don't, but that on its own doesn't make insurance something to avoid.

I've needed some work done on pretty much all my cars at some point, and given how complex they are now, many repairs will be pricy, so I'm inclined to take them.

That's my main fear so I am happy with a bigger excess, but go with the most comprehensive cover. That way crashing idrives and faulty sunroofs etc are all covered.

Garage List
My car turned three on November 11th and I took out BMW Extended Warranty on it (until something new comes along). All depends on your attitude to risk but having had a claim on my previous F30 during its Extended Warranty period I decided it was worth it.

Just got a quote for Comprehensive cover is £339 annual or £41 per month. (£250 excess) Recovery deleted as I have it through another policy.

It's quite a lot extra to pay monthly... £492.

Monthly is also non transferable if you sell privately, whereas an annual policy is. I tend to sell my cars privately and the car being covered still and transferable makes it attractive for a buyer. However if the pay monthly you can cancel at any time, like when you sell, but I think with an annual policy that's you for the year, no refund if sell before your year is up.

Have you made a warranty claim in the last 3 years? Then why are you bricking it now?

Interesting topic for me this. My Plan A is to buy mine in May and take a BMW warranty. Those figures do look good value.
I take it the cost varies per model and mileage?
Did you disclose your vehicle details to BM for the quote or have they just gone generic?

I had a £2,700 repair done in year 4 on my current F30.

Previously to that, I had a £4,500 repair and a further £1,400 repair in year 4 on an E90.

always had warranty, and I'm still up.
...by a lot!

But then I do drive...enthusiastically

No extended warranty for me. As my car is a high miler, they wanted silly money with a high excess.
That and the fact I'm handy with a set of spanners mean I would risk it. So far I'm ahead by over £1500.

They sent me a log in and password by letter. They know my model and ask the mileage.

There are three plans, three excesses and a choice of having vehicle recovery, so I suspect all those factors care taken into account.

If you calculate like that then you need to consider the price you would have been charged after goodwill for the repair, not the full rate. Clearly it’s a bit of a grey area, but from experience of myself and others, you would have probably been charged 30-40% of those numbers for a car with a full BMWSH.

I have heard of a couple of full engine replacements being charged £2k in around year 5.

Another factor for me at least is that they price by series, so a 320i without options is the same warranty price as a 335d with every box ticked, and far less than a basic 520d.

I possibly would have had some 'good will' on my F30.
But the E90 had 80k on it and had a 3rd party insurance.
And despite every effort including ringing bmw uk there was no good will payment.

As it was when the N47 engine timing chain was a new issue.
And I was basically told it could only be due to abusive driving style.
I had to pay the £4,700 in cash and then after lots of legal threats claim it back on the insurance...

Did your E90 have full BMWSH at 80k miles, and had you bought it from BMW, either new or as an AUC? Those are both significant factors in BMW's attitude towards goodwill, as I understand it. In the OP's case I believe he bought the car from BMW and it has covered a very low mileage.

To give you a couple of further examples of goodwill. Someone here had an EGR failure in year 4 with no warranty and was charged £87, from memory, for its replacement. I also had an EGR replaced in year 4 on my 335d on my car with a warranty with a 100xs - I was charged £100.

A friend required approx £4k of suspension work on an 5 Series touring at 4 years and 80k miles. He was charged £1,200.

I ran my last X5 until it was 6.5 years old without a warranty but bought from and maintained exclusively by BMW. During those 3.5 years out of warranty I had various jobs done - some free and some for 30-40% of the official price.

As others have said, it all depends on your attitude to risk. I bought our BMW as I assumed it would be well built and reliable. So far (five and a half years) this has proved to be the case. Whenever this insurance type questions arise their are always some who will post how much they or their mates' benefited from having the product. However these insurance policies are designed to make a profit for those issuing them (and I have no problem with this), but like gambling- the house always wins.

I do have insurance for the car and house and travel because the downside risk could be huge. However everything else I carry the risk myself. This includes pets, GAP (ridiculous product!) and any form of extended warranty / maintenance contract on any product. After nearly half a century as an adult home, car and pet owner, I am sure I have saved a fortune.

Life involves taking risks and as long as you have a pair you should revel in it!

That's my philosophy as well.

First BMW I bought from Stratstone (Derby) the sale was finished, but before they would finally agree it, I had to endure 10-15 minutes of sales talk from one of their financial guys - Insurance. Car, Tyres, Scratch, Alloys, Gap. That would have been an extra c£1k maybe.
