You would use the LS1 ECU. That's how most swaps are done full wire harness and ECU from LS is swapped.

LS swap on an F30 would be a magical thing

Anything is possible. Just be prepared to spend about $20-30K+ to do it and pray you can get all the electronics to happily talk to one another. You'll also lose out on BMW refinement as you'll be making your own engine and motor mounts. I'd also suggest going with a 6MT as there's no way the ZF auto will work. Lining up the shifter to fit into the BMW shifter console opening could be a problem.

If you get a used f30 for around $12k and an LS donor Camaro the cost might be lower. Or just a used motor someone has lying around, barn find or some shit like that and lots of diy elbow grease.

I'll just say that if you have to ask, then you likely have not a clue about what all is involved. You can't even replace a battery in these cars without some level of programming. I'll leave it at that.

Would likely just gut the whole F30 and have the shell to transfer the LS mechanicals. The manual tranny could probably be stock f30. If the ECU is from the Camaro then the alternator would be from the Camaro so no programming needed. Programming the battery is a simple coding task anyway.

Buy a Camaro, put a few M badges on it and call it a day.

Agreed. Between all the work and money you'll spend, you'd might as well just buy an alpha chassis Camaro ss ('16+).

Yeah, it has the ls3 from the previous zeta chassis camaro, and c6 vette I believe. There seems to be some nice used ones available, depending on location. A '16 or '17 with low miles will run about 40k+. An older one (some also with low miles) can be any where from around 33 to 36k. Manuals are harder to find, and usually have an asking price on the higher end of that spectrum.

S85 is that the 4 liter V8 from the E92 M3? The N20 has bootmod3 tune as well as jb4 which can go a long way at minimal cost and plug and play.

OTOH, if he swapped a HEMI in the transmission might work still...
