Dear drummers & sound engineers!

I am contemplating on buying either an F31 3S Touring or F36 4S GC. I'm a drummer and a sound engineer.

I would love to get my hands on the F36 but does anyone have any experience with carrying drumkits and/or audio equipment in their GCs? Although it doesn't seem like a car for that I thought I would ask around bimmerpost and see if anyone has past experiences with carrying large items around in their GCs and how easy is it?

I hope any drummers in here with a GC could shed some light on how well the GC's boot space be it seats up or down can facilitate a drum kit. Any advice, musician or not would be appreciated!

*If anyone has the dimensions for the F36 Gran Coupe boot space that would also be greatly appreciated. Many thanks!

I'd say you might get a kit in an F36, but to be safe I'd go with the F31 or F34.

I used to carry around my full kit and all hardware in my Protege (sedan) back in the day. Kick and floor in the backseat, everything else in the trunk. Surely the F36 has much more space. My singer/guitarist has had a F36 for the past 4 years or so and there's never been any issues with lack of space. The only concern I would have is if your kick would be a larger diameter, like a 26", it might not fit through the rear door opening.

Heck, I was able to fit a 5 piece kit in a Mini convertible once

While not a musician, here is a look at my 2016 F31 with a spare tire for some volume perspective. The spare is a 145/70 R18 (26" Dia).

Thanks for the info man much appreciated! Yeah I've got a 24x16 but downsizing to 22x16. Yeah if you can get a 5 piece in a mini the world is yours haha XD I do prefer the 4s F36 GC over the F31 Touring just because it's more 'Car' haha, but if it could fit in your Protoge then its more than enough.

Really appreciate the advice many thanks

Nice one still plenty of room in there as well, thanks for the tire comparison! Never thought about that as a sort of 'drum reference'

Cheers!

I got the F34 because it has as much cargo space as the F31 with as much rear seat legroom as the F10. The long wheelbase also gives a ride more like an F10.

So I have an F36 and can't comment on drum gear, but I fit the following in the back with the seats down no problem.

Kawaii 88 key stage piano (in case)
2 guitars in mono case
4U rack with IEMs for band
4U rack with Axe-fx guitar rig
12" small guitar cab
2 small bags with some accessories

The HUGE difference in the hatch for me is the keyboard in case. I'm sure this would be possible in a 3 series but it's infinitely easier with the hatch.

The hatch also allows for rounder/squarer items to be fit in easier.

The ONLY bummer is I bought mine last summer, and got to do 6 or 7 gigs, and then WHAMMO, haven't done any in a long ass time.

Hey many thanks for the info on keyboards, guitars and 4U racks too, still useful info since I'm an engineer as well so great!

yeah the hatch definitely helps with that hence why I like the F36

Yeah same here over in the UK sadly, nothing is on right now so everything is theoretical.

But hey its good to be prepared for when normality decides to pay a visit!

Appreciate the info, many thanks man

I looked at the X4 before buying the F34. The X4 is one of those odd ducks that's big on the outside, but small on the inside. Both the rear seat legroom and cargo space are considerably less than the F34.

I didn't really compare the x4 and f34, so good to know... I guess x3 then. I can't really get a connection with the F34. So I just can't see myself driving one.

How about the wagon....not my style either. There one more left I can consider an X3
