Gas prices, no CO2, no meat, no beer, no Christmas
Another real worry or just headlines?
According to some reports many will be freezing to death this winter being unable to afford to heat their homes unless we get a mild one due to climate change Apparently the knock on to food in particular meat supplies might mean Christmas dinners will be in jeopardy. Worry or more bluster? Last edited by MrManor; 09-19-2021 at 02:45 AM.. |

Depends if you have money / fits your budget.
My Gas and electric has gone up 50% with my renewal this month, if that answers your question. However, energy is one of my smaller outgoings and a necessity so no choice really. |

It's all a bit of a mess at the moment, coupled with the act of self harm we visited upon ourselves a few years ago these kind of "shocks" leave us vulnerable.
We're already struggling to import and export goods, now we're facing an energy shortage/price escalation, due to our increasing reliance on wind and lack of new nuclear power stations whilst taking coal and gas off line (for various reasons) we're in a parlous state, let's hope it's a mild winter. This may well be Boris's winter of discontent, half of me wants it to happen just so we can rid ourselves of this troublesome priest...

real issue, prices went up 70% in august alone and some of the smaller suppliers are looking to sell their books to the bigger guys, as they can't handle the changes in price.

Our energy supplier was one of the two that ceased reading this week. We are now waiting to see what the new tariff/supplier is going to look like financially for us but a quick run through Uswitch suggests at least a 50% increase over what we were paying/projected spend.
If that goes some way to answering the question of whether it's real or not : |

I've just started a tarrif where prices are frozen until September 2022. I should also be saving a whopping £10 a year based on my usage. Seems I got lucky and avoided the price hike for now.

I can't say that I have noticed that the security of fuel supply for UK energy provision has taken a significantly high priority (or urgency) in the last 35 years or so…
Of course, there will be much we cannot know about these things, but it seems to me that if the continuity and/or pricing your fuel sources can be controlled by others, without your approval, or against your wishes, then the security of your supply can be manipulated and/or compromised… How smart does our "dash for gas" look these days…?

Talking of shortages my local BP garage with 12 pumps has no super diesel or petrol, I noticed it was crazy busy the over the last few days, looks like the panic buying has started which has doubled down on the HGV driver shortages.

We need to make our own energy. Being a customer of foreign suppliers at a time when we've miffed plenty of them isn't the best MO.
We can't afford a £12k heat pump, but we've bought an efficient glass fronted gas fire to heat the front room cheaply. We renewed our old gas boiler with a modern one two years ago. We have a 4kw solar panels rig which make free hot water and I'm going to properly lag the roof space during my next week off work. Our UK energy situation isn't great. It's years of government failure I'm afraid. It's concerning. |
