340i Oil

Morning all,

My 2018 is due an oil change soon (Well, i am changing it soon the service schedule says its not due for another 10k)

It's only done 6k from new, but a lot of this is short commuting to work so i wanted to change it myself.

Can anyone recommend the correct weight and spec of oil for this please?

I've done lots of googling and am finding differing opinions for different climates etc.

The consensus for UK seems to be 0-20 LL-14 spec.

What do you guys think?

Thanks

In the UK a 5W30 oil to BMW spec LL-04 will be fine

Something like this

Buy a genuine filter from a dealer if possible, otherwise I think Mann is OEM

I think the B58 takes around 6.5 litres of oil so you'll need to buy 2 lots of oil however you'll have plenty left towards the next oil change

Regular oil changes is the best value insurance you can buy for engine longevity

Also make sure you have the appropriate tool to remove the filter before you start - my B48 engine has a large hex on the top of the housing, my old N20 had a 14 flute cap - either way the correct tool is easily available from ebay or Halfords etc

Not sure if there is a "best" oil, as long as it's LL-04. It's somewhat down to trade offs - if you go for the thinner stuff you'll get slightly better MPG (even arguably performance?) but slightly more engine wear than the more viscous.

Thanks Guys, i guess more frequent changes are the key really anyway.

Not sure i'm happy with these 15k service intervals anyway.

Just to add, i have a lovely little 12v pump that sucks the oil out of the dipstick tube...

The B58 doesnt have a dipstick does it!! How annoying.

Sandal BMW dealership has used 5w30 LL04 in mine for its previous 2 visits (including interim - I change annually).

Just beware there can be an issue when removing the oil filter on these cars, I remember another post on here when somebody tried to do it themselves and it ripped but they couldn’t get it all out. I also had the same problem when I took my 440 to Cooper bmw Malton for it’s first oil service, it was pissing out oil when I got it home so had to call out bmw emergency services to take it to Cooper York to get it done right.

Correct, many people advise to do oil only for interim. I changed my filter, no issues with it coming out in one piece.

Remember to buy new sump crush washer separately if not buying the filter.

When mine had its first service I think the filter housing broke up as they tried to remove the filter (or something like that)

The car had to stay overnight at the dealer for parts.
