Powder Coating or PlastiDip on LI?
Anyone have their rims powder coated or plastic-dipped?
I have the 440i M-Sport with the stock 400M rims and I'd love to try changing the color from silver to a darker gray or black to match my MG paint or the Gloss Black trim details. Any tips or advice or shops you've used are super welcomed! |

There's really no comparison between the two. If you want the cheap route, use plasti dip. It "might" look good for a month or so but you'll be on borrowed time after that. Looks cheap and kiddish in my opinion.
The right way to change your wheel color would be professional paint or powder coat with powder coat being the preferred method as its MUCH more durable than paint. I paid $440 for a set of factory 18" to get done in a satin black. I used a company called All American Powder Coat that has been in business for 25+ years (Sacramento). Be careful on places with super low prices but also dont let yourself get hosed either. $500 seems to be the sweet spot depending on the size of wheels and color chosen. |

I've used plastidip in the past on my wheels and while it did look good for a few months eventually it started to peel. About 2 weeks ago I got my 19 inch OEM wheels powder coated gloss black for $460 at Static Coatings located at 136 Getty Avenue Clifton, NJ, 07011. You won't get the same glossy look by using plastidip. The only advantage to using plastidip is that it can be peeled off if you don't like how it looks. You can see the difference in the pics I attached, the top is powdercoated and the bottom is with plastidip.

I just had my wheels powdercoated gloss black and I'm really happy with the results. If you're in Nassau county, go to European Auto in Island Park. Ask for George.

Really appreciate all the advice and tips! Sounds like powder coat is the best way to go for sure if I do it.
Also sounds like $400-500 is the right price for 4 rims which is super helpful Rcaso, is your 3 mineral gray? That's my 440's color and those pictures are super helpful. |

Maybe try Superwrap, formerly know as Auto Dip? I've seen some impressive gloss finishes but have never tried it personally. They also have a good variety of other colors in both gloss and matte. If you do go this route, please report back with your results so we know whether this is a viable option for those of us interested.

Theres a place in Brooklyn called Repairs on Wheels they are 24/7 and do Rim repair and refurbishing. Cost me $600 to powder coat 4 wheels but only because I left my car there. Had I just brought the rims it would have been $400. You can drop it off at night and pick it up in the morning. Used them for my M5 and my X5M they do a great job but the balancing after was not perfect so I had to get them rebalanced.

Be careful with powder coating shop that are quick and cheap, most shop powder coat over the existing finish, some use a torch to burn off the paint and others would blast the crap out of the wheels which overheat the wheel, very few shop do chemical stripping which is the right way, very few shop does it because of the cost, the chemical stripping system is close to $20K and not many shop have this type of equipment, there is a place in Staten Island that does excellent work, the name of the place is Espo's powder coating, if you search it on Facebook you will see it, very high end exotic cars, from Honda's to Ferrari, Lamborghinis and almost anything you could imagine, very reliable and upfront, the place also has state of the art wheel mounting and balancing, they can also straighten out the wheels, they also add material to the wheel if material is missing, great place.
