Bmw extended warranty- worth $4500?
I got a quote from two separate dealers for an extended warranty for my 2014 328i. They both came in at exactly the same price. Roughly $4,500 for an additional 3 years and a total of 100K miles. I know a lot has been said about this topic, but I'm trying to decide if I want to buy the warranty, risk not having the warranty, or buy a newer car, probably a cpo, get an extended warranty and some more features that I don't currently have, including upgrading to a x35 or x40 engine.
If I upgrade I would have to get Xenon or LED lights, Harman Kardon stereo, rear-view camera, M Sport brake package, and possibly the track package. I don't currently have any of these options. Thoughts?

Viewing your sig, you have a well equipped F30. Sure, it does not have the N55 motor but in all honesty, power is only relative. You will ALWAYS want something faster and better.
If you haven't already, pay off your loan or pay it down, enjoy it for a couple more years, then upgraded. In the meantime, coin up and buy BMW's EVP coverage in Gold (I went with 2yrs/75K for my wife's X3 M-sport) as you don't need platinum. You'll have peace of mind that your F30 will be covered. I was down the same crossroad with my wife's X3. It's similarly spec'd to your EB and frankly, is a gorgeous looking car. As stated, we purchased BMW's EVP and will enjoy the car for another 2 yrs or until we hit 75K miles, then trade it in for a X5 M-sport 35d. Just my .02 cents/devil's advocate. |

You got the same price, because in the state of Florida, auto extended warranties are regulated like insurance. The state says it is not fair to charge 2 customers different prices for the same plan, therefore everyone gets the same price.
I have not done it with BMW, however I have bought extended warranties out of state for 5 cars of 2 different brands. If there is any pushback, find a friend/relative in another state and change your address on file to that, make it a valid address for your credit card, have the policy sent there, and then magically "move back to Flordia" a month or two later. Sounds extreme but you're talking about 30 mins of effort to save $1500-2000. I never had any issues "using" my extended warranty in FL from the other brands. And to be honest, even on the most reliable car I've ever owned - I got about $1200 in repairs out of it over 7 years. (Policy cost about $1400 so technically I was down a bit) |

So I tried an out of state dealer and got a quote only about $200 less. Gold coverage for 3 year/ 75k total is 3739.
I enjoy a "spirited driving style" and worry that could increase chances of some expensive failure. A warranty would still be much less than upgrading to a newer car... Any recommendations on non-BMW warranties?

My 2006 E91 ex-warranty easily paid for itself. I do like spirited driving and the Chicagoland roads can beat up a car some. When it comes time for the ex-warranty on the 2016 E31, I'll definitely shop for the most effective warranty. Although the new ex-warranties seem to be more expensive and with less time coverage.

Can you keep us posted? My coverage ends at the end of the year and I am also looking for the extended coverage. Do you know which coverage plan they were offering? If you can get the salesman's name and post it here or PM me I'd appreciate it.

You're probably not going to hit the mileage so you're essentially paying $1500/year for an extended warranty. Do you think you're going to have to spend $1500/year on warranty work? Most likely the answer is no. It's highly unlikely that you'll spend even half that.
Even if something does happen that say requires $5000 in repairs, over your life, you'll waste a lot of money if you buy extended warranties. If you have five cars and you get extended warranties on all five, you'll basically have spent over $20,000 for probably about $5000 worth of warranty work. This is of course, highly dependent on how you drive the car. If you keep maintenance intervals short, know how to not blow up your drive train, and know how to do some of your own work, extended warranties are a huge waste of money. One big thing to keep in mind is that independent mechanics can be just as good if not better than the dealership, and about a third of the price. Sure, you can compare what the dealership charges you for work and say that's how much you saved by getting the extended warranty, but why would you take your car to the dealership after the warranty expires? Every major city has great indy mechanics and they do work for a fraction of the cost of the dealership and they don't jerk you around with useless service items that you don't actually need. |

taking a warranty out is use, mileage and age dependent - no sh*t Sherlock If you are keeping it for only 5 years and under 90k miles - it unlikely you will get any benefit from an extended or Indy warranty. My last 5+ cars have cost very little in first 5 years in terms of repairs, and where unsual components have failed the manufacturer makes a contribution (suspect this is not the case with non-preminum brands and if you've not serviced with the stealer) I've only benefited when the cars over 5 yo, beyond 90k and kept the car for 3-4 years past the original warranty. on the last two cars I'm £3000 ($4000) up - Indy warrantys, eom parts and Labour rates. probably double this for stealers. In terms of manufacturer extended or Indy warranty. manufacturer backed is hassle free from posts here. Indy are not and very picky about covering the big stuff - from personal experience - usually insist on OEM parts, don't allow enough repair time etc etc. They maybe cheaper but there is a good reason for this. I've gone manufacturer extended monthly payments on my 3yo 55k car. over the next 7 years, I'll have spent £4000 ($5500) - it will at least give peace of mind |

Funny. The OE extended warranty saved me a few hundred to a thousand dollars in repairs on my 335d, and because it was transferable helped my sell that 335d.
