Power source for a dash cam ..where from?

If you were going to put a dash cam under the rear view mirror housing where would you take power from? Dont want dangly wires!
Need to run a small cable through the front roof lining to somewhere.
I need either 5v or a 12v source. One that switches off after the car is locked as well...
Any thoughts?

You may wish to consider some preliminary decisions about your installation:

1. Do you want parking surveillance? For how many hours after engine shutdown?

2. Do you want a rear cam too?

3. Do you want GPS data embedded in the video file? Do you want special software that plays your front and back videos and shows speed & map position?

After looking at all these questions (actually raised by another helpful forum member a while ago), I gave up on my original dashcam DIY project and had the dealer install a "BMW Advanced Eye" front & back dashcam; it took about two hours.
It's neither the best nor the cheapest, but it works perfectly - and should it fail, it's the dealer's problem to fix it. For my purposes it does well what I was looking for.

If you already bought your cam: I believe that you get switched 12V inside the stem of the rear view mirror - but don't place a GPS antenna there, it may not work because of interference, at least 8" distance may be required.

I only want to film on the move really. Möbius cam can be programmed to autostart and record when it detects power so i just need a switched source . The 12v in the mirror sounds perfect. Just need to figure which wire's then....
Its so small I can make a bracket so it sits under the mirror housing

Does anyone happen to know which are the switched power wires in the mirror housing? Anyone have a schematic ?????
I only have a normal adaptive mirror. Nothing special.

Check out this thread. I followed these instructions for wiring my radar detector. Worked perfectly on my F30 and my wife's F15.

The easiest way is move the wire from the camera to roof lining then to the side then under passenger glove box and back to the cig. Lighter. Do a youtube search and there are thousands of videos showing how it’s done. I am unsure whether this applies to all bimmer but my F30, the cig. Will loses its power after 3 mins when the car is switch off/lock so the camera will shut off.

Thanks for the help guys. I decided to find and take power from inside the mirror housing, 12v.
I Used a tiny micro dc to dc converter to drop that to 5v for the mobius cam. Secured a small piece of threaded rod in through the housing with hot glue and screwed on the cam. Complete with an up angle mini USB connection it looks great I think. Even better is it can't be seen from the drivers view as it's hidden.
Just going to put a little black shroud around the thread.

Programmed the mobius to work inverted and to power up and record on ignition start and it's all good.
