Custom CAI & Inlet

Has anyone seen or attempted to run a custom cold air & inlet on a F2x or F3x N55 powered vehicle that enters from the passenger side?

Instead of running the typical OEM air box or off the shelf CAI & inlets, I am thinking of making the effective length of the intake system shorter which should translate to a slightly quicker spool and better breathing. I know there won't be much to gain, but at the same time I think I can get away with doing it for just about as much as it would cost to purchase the products already available on the market. I would like for it to enter behind the grill similar to what the F8x cars have. The good thing about the stock style system is that it doesn't have many bends, but at the same time the length is too long IMO. My thought process is similar to what the N54 guys have with their relocated inlets, and in my experience the shortest and straightest path to the turbo is always the best.

I've already thought about moving the coolant expansion tank and hoses, and it seems like one could just swap in the B58 components or some from a N20/N26 since they are over on the driver side. That would also eliminate that hose that always seems to break that goes over the core support.

I don't know if I'll go through with it, but it is something that has been on my mind lately and I may just attempt to tackle it this fall.

I recall seeing a off the shelf intake that goes directly into the front grill, but i think it may have still went across the engine bay. IIRC it was well over $1000 and made of carbon fiber. It was similar to what you mentioned for the F8x cars.

The other main thing to note is that you would need to have a port for the vacuum line that goes to the intake and a MAF mount. The vacuum line would need to be custom, and the MAF harness would likely need to be extended. You could in theory be tuned to run no MAF, but i dont think you can delete that vacuum line...

I honestly don't think something like this would breathe any better than just running something list MSTv2 and CTS intake. Maybe with big turbo you would like completely remove the inlet and intake system and run a short tube with a air filter.

If it went all the way to the driver side, that's terrible. That would add a whole 180 degree turn that isn't necessary.

Extending wires is easy, and the connection for the vacuum tube could possibly be removed from the stock tune and placed onto the new one. If not, it wouldn't be difficult to fabricate a different style of connection.

An open filter intake will make power - thejeremyman9 intake comparison showed that the CTS was pulling positive fuel trims in comparison to the MPPK/AFE combination, and again confirmed by a few dyno tests here and there.

But how much work is 10WHP worth?

Something similar to the vadersolutions b58 front mount intake, but trying to keep the bends to a minimum.

Not really that big a hassle, and it would definitely be worth it if it flows better than anything that's already on the market. My biggest obstacle would be finding the time to do it .

This sound interesting and fun, doesn't seem too too difficult to pull off, I was throwing around this idea as well awhile ago, I may have to revisit this idea now the weather is getting cooler.

ideally it would be cool to try the inlet and intake from.a b58 car..

I believe the inlet flange to the turbo is different. I haven't priced out a b58 combo, but just the VS - B58 FRONT MOUNT INTAKE is too much coin for me lol. No way would I pay that much for a few pipes that are welded together and a filter.

I would need to go out and look at the car again and see how pratical it is to get a semi-straight shot out from the turbo to the front grill on the passenger side.
