Both are good tires, but personally I would go with Nokian Hakkapeliitta tires if you can find them in your area.

I've used both.

Disclaimer: the Xi3's were on a E82 1-Series (RWD) - the Sotto's RFT are on an F30 X-drive

Michelin Xi3 is a great improvement over their original X-ice tire. Xi3 I found quiet and comfortable, but a little mushy compared to the Summer Pilot Super Sport, but it's generally expected from most non-RFT wintertire. - Great for Wet and Slushy snow conditions. - Deep compact heavy snow not so much.

Pirelli is not my first choice when it comes to tire brands, but it's what the dealer offered on their OEM winter wheel kits.

Last winter was my the first winter on Sottozero 2' RFT, and I must say I was pleasantly surprised by the handling in dry/wet conditions, it felt like I was on summer tires.
Performed well overall, snow, slush & wet performance is good.

Sotto's were slightly more noisy over dry pavement. -

HAKKA's are amazing, but not sure they are worth the premium. - I guess it depends on how harsh your winters are.

xIce3 if you can, friends advised against Sottozeros (even though xice isn't avail on 19" stag) - Sottozeros act more like all-season tires and will give you a little more road noise but a lot more performance on the non-slushy/wet winter days, but as soon as any snow/ice/slush gets involved they're mediocre winter tires. Also, over long-term wear&tear, Xices rate much better.

X-ice i3's as others have mentioned are an excellent tire.

Nokian Hakka's would be a prudent choice - great tires. I had very good experience with Pirelli Sottozero winter tires. They performed well in any winter conditions.

I had both on 2 different F32. I would say that the Pirellis are excellent in wet/dry highway conditions, but they're pretty terrible on snow/ice.

The X-ice3 are way better on snow/ice, but I find them softer ("mushier"?) on dry pavement.

If you mainly drive on cleared or wet pavement, the Pirellis will be ok. But if you have to deal with snow covered roads, IMO, the X-ice3 are the ones to get (although I haven't tried the Hakkas yet).

I have Sottozero 240 Series II. Excellent on wet and dry roads. I have not tested yet on snow and ice.

On my 4Runner, I have Nokian Hakkapeliitta R SUV and extremely happy with it's performance on wet, dry, ice and snow. It lasted 9 years (from 2011) and still has 4 mm of thread. This will be the last year I will be using it and will replace it with Hakka R3 SUV next year.

No experience on X ice winter tires but used Pilot Alpin PA2 before. It was my favorite before I got the Nokians .
