Did they explain why they wouldn't approve a warranty replacement? I'm curious.

couldnt find any metal shavings in the oil filter. Leakdown and compression test result is good. crankcase pressure from top down etc(dont remember) is also showing good. only got a valve cover replacement which seems to be pretty common amongst b58 engines.

So basically BMW said, "Yeah they're scored, but it's fine. Here's a new valve cover."

How did you find out they were scored?

they showed me the pictures of it 🤣 and it was submitted in a PUMA or something. And yes I was having a stalling issue which seems to be failed injector and seal which is why they found out the cylinder are scored from borescoping them one by one

Interesting because you really wouldn't find metal shavings from scored walls like you would with bearing failures and such maybe with a oil sample test, but then again the scored wall I'm assuming is from the injector over fueling or leaking into the cylinder?

I would assume so! as the spark plug for #2 was oil fouled so the injectors are malfunctioning and luckily I got it fixed right away. so probably the other injectors filled it too much and hence caused the scoring. They had an engine tech to take a look at it and since the pressures and cranks were all normal he said it's nothing to worry about. Im not sure about that but ohwell

Pretty stupid of BMW if you ask me and the PUMA guy handling this issue. I wouldn't risk letting the engine go with a scored wall i bet it will eventually lead to oil consumption issue. BMW has really gone cheap with their warranty work and I'm assuming the past wear and tear items being replaced at no cost for new cars and free oil changes without having to buy the maintenance package has really bit their asses.

The "free" maintenance isn't really free. It's added in to the base price of your car. If you think BMW is doing things out of the kindness of their heart.

It's widely known BMW has had for a long time (minus Suzuki), the industry's fattest profit margins.

This is just BMW being cheap AF. I hope this isn't a common issue.

How many forum members experienced cylinder wall scoring in B58 engines?

Mileage? Symptoms? BMW response?

What are the valve covers getting replaced for? Over excessive crankcase pressure or the gasket is leaking oil?

If I'm not mistaken this might be the third. The first one i read the guy had meth and they tried blaming him for the mods and come to find out the injector failed and it wiped out the cylinder so they replaced his engine under warranty and i think i read about another one a while back, but this guy was bone stock. They all seemed to be 2016 and 2017 models though.

Thanks for sharing. Well - a bad injector can flood the cylinder as the excess fuel washes the oil film from the rings and cylinder walls. This leads to metal over metal contact and cylinder wall scoring.

I'd like to rephrase my earlier question:

- How many forum members had malfunctioning fuel injectors replaced? Mileage?
- Did the dealer identify any cylinder wall scoring issues?

I got mine replaced at 35000 kms with the issue of stalling after cold start and putting a bit of the throttle. The tech the idle combustion control and since it was inconclusive they borescoped the cylinder. I had a thread about it if you wanna see

Wanna see shredded turbo?

Soo, the nut of the turbo came loose, shredded the turbo, dented the throttle valve, sent metal shards into the cylinder. Engine warranties by Dinan not because of the tune, even BMW admitted it was manufacturer. Dinan warranties it completely because Canada BMW voids your powertrain warranty if you modded any part of the powertrain in your car, even if the mod has nothing to do with it. The bill was ~$28,000CAD. Gonna thank Dinan for helping out through the ordeal.

Note: this is extremely rare. The turbo was going to fail whether tuned or not.

Though this was a m240i on Dinan stage 1 v1. Now the car is on stage 2 v2.

On the other had, our 340i GT has been running great.

All this talk of motors that need replacing have me afraid of some undiagnosed damage after my turbo blew. I did limp it home for about 10 miles ...

Everything seems like it's running great. Should I go back and ask for borescope inspection to check for scored walls? The SA said my turbo "disintegrated," so I have no idea where all that extra metal went ...

No harm done by asking for it. BMW over here did it because some other tests failed.
