Well crap - tore my bumper

The one time I go out to run an errand during covid and I snag my bumper/fender on the protruding bumper of a box truck parked next to me. This feels like its going to be expensive.

So:

1. Repair it at BMW or an Auto Body shop?
2. What do you think this is gonna run me? Trying to decide if I should claim it on insurance since its my fault...

Ugh, what a day.

What's your deductible? Don't take it to BMW, find a specialty collision shop that can match a bmw paint like your EB. Get the quote and go from there, if you can go out of pocket that's probably what I would do. Looks like you ripped the brackets where the bolts are held in, popped out your front reflector which is a quick fix and dented your fender. I'd imagine repairs like this would be close to 2k.

Why don’t you ask your insurance if it would raise your rates? They would know that better than anyone on here. Unless your agent sees this post.

Hi Dreadpyrat,

That is probably going to be at best 3.5k. Most likely 4k repair.
Best to use your insurance and pay deductible.
I used to work at the largest Porsche dealer in the bay area.
We used Superior Body Shop in San Carlos. 956 Bransten Road, 650-593-1093.
Never had to take back any of the repairs or paint work they did for us. Always done right the first time.
Certified Porsche repair facility.

Unfortunately it looks like you might need a new bumper.

The fender-hood gap looks pretty off too.

If you are willing to go as far as Burlingame, this guy does good work for a fair price.

Mine was less damaged and it was still about 3k, so yeah, might as well go thru insurance.

Nasty but purely cosmetic, once done by a skilled painter/fitter it will look as good as new.
Here in the UK I would guess about £3K to supply fit and paint new bumper and fender plus blend drivers door.
I would do it for you if you were here lol
Even worse when self inflicted too.
Hope you get a good deal and a great job done

Take it to a reputable body shop. There's 0 reason a BMW dealer has to do this--their body shop is no different than any other reputable body shop.

Ouch. I’d guess at least 4k. New bumper + possibly repair that front quarter panel, but it’s a complex shape right over the wheel well so the body shop might recommend just replacing the panel. 2-3k for parts/repair depending, another 2k for painting.

Not many dealers own BMW-only body shops. They may own body shops that work on multiple makes, though. What you want you to consider is a BMW CCRC - certified collision repair center.
https://bmwusaservice.com/ccrc

That said, my daughter got her 230i repaired at a non-BMW CCRC that the insurance company recommended at way less than the CCRC and it was just fine. It was a lease though, so we weren’t all that picky. I also had my E46 bumper repainted at a non-CCRC (some doofus scraped it up in a parking lot) and it was also just fine for a good 6-8 years after.

Good point. Here Bmw doesn’t have a body shop, they use the ford dealership. So that’s where I took mine.

This is precisely why I think it’s silly to ask people on a forum what a body repair is going to cost. You have a range of 2 to 5k. Go to your insurance, then get a couple of estimates.

For reference, my old F30 had the entire bumper replaced and repainted at a CCRC. Was able to reuse the headlights and grills, much like OP should. The price billed to insurance was $3379. OP will need a new fender so expect a price far North of what I paid.

At least your headlight isn't damaged. I would go to a body shop to let them find out how bad it is first.

That's not necessarily true, due to front pedestrian-impact laws, BMW headlight brackets are soft as butter, to snap, upon impact.

I busted both sides of my lights, on many of our renown NYC potholes and they just look just as the OP's but the mounting points are all broken..

I bet you a coke his headlight is wobbling..

It's just my guess by looking at OP's photos. But if that's the case, going through insurance to replace both headlights and bumper would be a better choice.

I don't drink coke. So no thank you, I won't take your bet.
