Are M3’s becoming collectors item?

I’m always looking at used car prices and specifically F80 M3’s. It seems prices for M3’s have jumped significantly since Covid started. Wonder If this due to low M3 sale or if M3’s are becoming more collectable. Right now the prices are just insane. At this rate I don’t think I will ever buy one.

I think it has more to do with the chip shortage that's reduced new inventory and driven used prices through the roof. Case in point, I bought a CX-9 for daily family hauling in 2020. A year later, the same model and year is actually worth more.

Car prices are already inflated, and M3s being more expensive in general, have seen a lager inflation than the rest. Not sure if that puts them in the collector's category yet as this may be temporary.

A little tangential to the topic, but right now I wouldn't consider buying any car unless I desperately needed one. The other day I was looking at new builds on the BMW website and features have been dropped due to the chip shortage...if I'm going to spend 50k+, I want all the features that I want.

It's the current market every used vehicle basically. Hopefully it'll go back to normal.

Based on some research I saw reported in the news last week, new car prices are up something 15~20% and used car prices are up 30%+ due to shortages in the new car market. The only way I'm buying a car in this market is if I have one totaled.

As auto makers build fewer enthusiast cars, I wonder if prices will remain high. Porsches of any vintage are out of reach these days. Cars like the Supra, BRZ/86, Miata, and even the new Nissan Z are a dying breed. The Z4 probably doesn't even sell enough to show up as a statistic. Mercedes killed off the SLK and even the Camaro might not be along much longer due to poor sales. That doesn't leave many choices new, so the fun stuff on the used market is all that's left and everyone is fighting for them.

Yes, same in the UK - is odd, a used M3 seems to be 2-3k more expensive than a like for like M4 (which are more numerous to be fair). Although am assuming the M4 was more $$ when new. Can only guess less M3s were produced?

This is all supply and demand (nothing with collectability). I was looking for a decent Honda Civic for my daughter. Last year, something 5 years old was $12k CAD. This year, $15-17k.

I'm basically on the fence of buying new, since they have better financing rates than used.

Not necessarily less M3s were produced, but as M3s production was stopped 2 years earlier than M4s production, that makes more M4s still around.

If you can find a 5 year old civic in good shape for $15-17 buy it lol.

Had my daughter’s ‘18 Civic Touring in for an oil change at the Honda dealer on Friday and the offered me $21k on the spot - potentially more if I bought another car. Prices are nuts right now! They had two ‘18s on the lot for $25,900 and $29,900 lol

Get this, they had a 2019 Civic Touring Hatchback with 15,000 kms and the had it listed at $34,900 - $5k more than it retailed for in 2019. Funny thing is, all 3 were sold by Saturday morning…

Might have been 10 year old car. Regardless, really high for something that wasn't that high a couple years ago.

No I am no where near replacing my 435i. Just like to watch the used car market to see the trends.

Yup, been like this for over a year now. I sold a car privately in August almost 3 years after purchase with 20k+ more miles for $6k over what I paid. Is/was a great time to be someone with a car to sell BUT not looking for another. Places like Vroom were paying insane amounts for vehicles when I was looking around over the summer.

The F80 prices are due to the chip shortage. All my cars are worth more than what I owe on them. That's just the way it is for now. The G8X might be subjectively ugly, but they are selling like hotcakes, it's almost impossible to get an allocation, and they are overall better performing cars despite the added weight. As a two time F80 owner who hated the G80 design, it's growing on me. Honestly, the E90 and the F80 got a good amount of hate when they came out, although I think the G80 is probably even more polarizing.

G80 is being received well in the UK. I'm sensing the front is growing on lots more BMW users, as we see the G80/82 on the road. Get the right colour and spec, makes for a very striking and purposeful looking machine.

One long time 'M' owner has stated his G80 gets more attention from other drivers and personal comments in a very positive way, than any other M-car he's owned over the years.

He also says it's the best M-car he's owned and he's been through a few over the years, including E46 M3's and an E60 M5 with its V10 masterpiece of an engine.

I think the car demands presence, and has beautiful paint jobs. But overall, I just dont really like how it looks in many regards. Not the worst, but I strongly prefer how the e90 and f80 m3's look in comparison.

The e90 still looks amazing imo

The E90 4 door is looking a little long in the tooth, the E92, however is still gorgeous.

The F80 is probably one of the best looking sedans ever made IMHO. I might be biased, having/had 2 of them, but I had/have 2 of them because I thought they were so beautiful.

I ordered a G82 because, after initially being turned off by it, I started to see how forward thinking the design was. I still don't think it looks as cohesive as the F80, but it looks new and exciting, even how polarizing the front it. I still LOVE my F80, but seeing it next to the G82, I can see what BMW is doing, shaking up conventions and taking risks.

"G80 is being received well in the UK"

Err well maybe by G80 owners that are in denial, sales (and orders) for the model are significantly down according to two separate dealers I spoke with and NONE of my friends or colleagues with BMW's (mainly M cars, M-lites and 440i / 340i's) are even considering the g80 or the new 4 series purely because they are honking to look at, most U.K. YouTubers and reviewers still think it's a dog to look at despite being good to drive.
