Automatic Map Updates not working ?

My 2017 F32 440i has Automatic Map Updates enabled. BMW Connected Drive tells me "BMW ConnectedDrive automatically updates its navigation map data up to 4-times per year ... via the integrated SIM card directly into the vehicle". "Update takes place automatically and comfortably" (I'm glad it's comfortable !).

I just checked and the maps on my car are version EUROPE EVO 2017-2, whereas the currently available version for manual download is EVO 2018-2.

Does anyone have experience of this automatic update working (or not working) ?

Incidentally I downloaded the latest maps last night, which took 1.5 hours and created a file of just over 29Gb in size, which would not fit onto the available space on my largest USB stick (32Gb) so I've had to order a bigger one !

There is a recent thread on here about this.

The automatic ceased to become automatic sometime last year, although nobody seems to know why.

Thanks for that. Sorry I missed the earlier thread.

When I questioned my local stealer, they informed me that the updates were taking place, but it was now showing the update on the car idrive.

Believe what you want, but I think it is some lame excuse by a dealer to pretend updates are happening when they are not.

I've always just downloaded the latest and updated via usb.

Perhaps a silly question ... but how do you know ? Does it announce the fact, or do you have to look ?

Don't forget that you have to format your new stick to FAT32 which isn't straightforward, but easy enough.

Updated my maps when I was out last night - it completed well within my 40 minute drive. Recognised the map on the stick as soon as I started the car. Nav was operational throughout apart from a brief restart, and nav continued after that.

Thanks for that. I did mine last night also. I bought a new 128Gb USB3.1 ultra fast Sandisk memory stick for £23.99 (!!!! amazing value) and did the same. Took about 30 minutes. I think the stick must have been FAT32 already (due to the size perhaps) so it worked fine.

What about the rest of the car's software now ? I wonder if that needs updating manually also ?

Just posting to add to the "OTA updates seem to be back on" messages... mine updated again just today, so maybe the online gremlins are slowly being fixed...??

NTFS works fine, less hassle too.
