ZF recommends a fluid change at 62K miles. I elected to have mine done at ~50K.

Beware that if you have the BMW Insured warranty all future claims on the box will be refused

Refused on what grounds ? Using an independent specialist, or for BMW carrying out a fluid change ?

BMW quote that the box is sealed for life, anyone tampering with it therefore voids the warranty. Or so I've heard....

You heard wrong. Sealed for life is marketing BS. ZF itself recommends that the fluid be changed (from memory) every 62K miles.

Mine was done by BMW and videoed to prove it. The process is very simple : drain fluid; refill with new; drive the car ensuring all the ratios in the gearbox are used (this flushes the torque converter); drain fluid; refill.

No impact on warranty.

I've also had mine done by a BMW dealership, so if they refused a warranty claim then that would be an interesting conversation or two.

I didn't pay for it. It was done under warranty as had a leaking seal replaced. Not sure it would have been standard practice, but I had a good relationship with that dealership.

A couple of hours I think. ~£600. Transmission fluid is expensive, and 2 x drain/fill drives the cost.

Some transmissions need the sump pan to be replaced as it has integral filter.

That's not bad. I had it done for 420 in 3 hours last year. I supplied the oil though.

Dear Daftasabrush,
your request has been received by ZF Services UK Ltd..

Your question to us:
Hi there, I note the 8P70H transmission has an oil service interval of 60K KM, please can you tell me the oil service interval for the 8HP50? Many thanks, Daft

We will get in touch with you as soon as possible.

Three days later:

Dear Daftasabrush,

the following solution has been found for your request:

Hello Daft,

The service interval is the same

My 8 speed ZF gearbox had gear oil, pan, seals and filter changed 2 weeks ago. Car was 1 day at my local BMW indie garage. Handy that they are ZF trained and certified to do this kind of work.
Gearbox was working well and smooth before with 66k trouble free miles the clock, but does seem to be 5-10% smoother now - same kind of feeling you get after an engine oil change.
Paid £750 + VAT. So a little expensive for this preventive maintenance, but was told a new gear box would be approximately £5K.
