340i Potential break in oil change?

Hey all,

This may be a silly question but I'm curious to get some feedback. I purchased a 2018 340i in August and it was just put into service in June. Now it still only has around 2400 kilometers on it. The car was built April 2018 and has not had an oil change yet, the cars first service is 04/2020 (I think they pushed the service date a year ahead cause it was not in service). I'm thinking I may look into getting an oil change mainly because it will be two years if I wait till service date. Also did just get out of break in. Any thoughts? Wait till service or just do it?

I came from owning a Subaru STI that I was ocd about servicing. so I'm trying to get used to this 1 year service interval

There can be a lot of metal shed inside the engine during the break in period, so it's not a bad idea to do an initial oil change, and more importantly a filter change, around 1500 miles. After that the recommended interval should be OK. There are those who'll disagree, but if BMW didn't think it was OK it wouldn't be recommended. I do change my filter twice a year, even though I change the oil once, because it's so fast, easy and inexpensive.

This has been discussed several times; maybe more often on the E9x boards. Especially search for people discussing Blackstone oil sample test results.

Do one if you want; won't really make a difference.

Analysis on first oil change won't be realistic due to the initial run in of parts. Factory engine assembly is going to be cleaner than any shop does.

Mine is a May 2018 build. Purchased in Oct 18 with only a few miles. I now have 6000 and service is scheduled for May 20.

I'm not overly concerned. I'm probably more concerned about the oil filter housing issue on the B58.

That said no harm in getting it done I guess.

Never drove the car hard for the first 6599 miles (factory oil) when the iDrive told me to come in for my first service.

But if your planning to beat on the car right after break in period then by all means go change your oil. For me it was unnecessary.
