Plasti Dip Winter Wheels? Does it look cheap?
I desperately want to buy a new set of wheels, preferably black, to replace my stock 17s. But, I live in Minnesota. With winter approaching quickly I feel it's a bad decision to buy new wheels just to be abused by the road conditions through March (yes, MARCH).
Will it really look that cheap? I plan on buying new wheels on Black Friday regardless, but I won't put them on until April, so this will only be a short term resolution. Any pictures will help! |

Are you planning on buying the same size wheels on Black Friday? If so, throw some snow tires on your current wheels and dip them. I've had bad luck dipping wheels. But your experience may vary.
If you're buying bigger wheels (you should), toss some snow tires on your 17s and buy black wheels. Just google plastidip wheels, you'll find lots of pictures. I did it to my daughter's car and it didn't last (I did six coats) so I didn't try it with mine. I just sold my 18s, bought some all black 17s for snow and bought some 19s for summer. |

How much damage will salt/sand/snow do to a set of new black wheels? Chips are inevitable here, so I'm not as worried about that, but I don't want to end up with faded/stained wheels at the end of winter. |

Yes, it does look cheap, but I'd say it would be tolerable temporarily.

Shouldn’t be a problem. My winter set still looks new. Only one winter so far. I did put a good wax/sealant on them before winter started. After winter I gave them a good washing and a new coat of sealant.

No I didn’t. I dipped my daughter’s Buick wheels black then did a coat of plastidip clear coat. After a month it looked horrible and my pressure washer started ripping stuff off.
I bought black Rial X10 in 17s for my winter setup. Last edited by chowser51; 10-17-2019 at 06:12 PM.. |

I had no issues plastidipping my grill on my bmw. I did the grill on my Subaru and it lasted the four years I kept the car. I used it as a chrome delete on my subaru as well. I just don’t think it’s good enough to last on wheels.

There's a few truths for plastidip... if it looks bad in less than 6 months, you applied it incorrectly. You really need to use glossifier on wheels. It won't last forever. It can look amazing.

Ive done plastidip on winter wheels. The flat black never looks as good as day one, just a slightly dirty look all winter. Its durable but i would suggest either going with a color other than black or metalizer/glossifier over top to give it a bit more sheen. Black for a base is fine though, more coats the better

See, this looks good. Definitely doesn't look like what I'm used to seeing on VWs and Subaru's. What did you do differently?

Those are 17” Rial X10 wheels. They come in black, silver or some dark silver. I bought them in black. |

No, stock xdrive height.
I thought about lowering but with our winters and my job, I'm usually out and about before the snow plows are working. With my 19s |

You've convinced me to stick with 17s for the winter. Gonna utilize my snow tires and buy some new wheels at discount tire tomorrow. Cheers! Beautiful husky btw

If you are going to buy winter or summer wheels get a minimum of 18" which, depending on your car, is what you would need if you ever want to upgrade to M Sport or M Performance brake calipers. Definitely avoid 19" in your climate with potholes. 19" are rough riding and too much potential to damage tires. Also don't forget the possibility of buying a used set of BMW stock 18" wheels for winter or summer use. And selling your 17" if necessary. There are usually reasonably priced used 18" on the market with lots of guys upgrading to 19"/20". Cheapest option is to mount winter tires on your 17"s and drive them now as is. Buy 18"s on Black Friday, mount them in April and put off decision on 17"s until Nov'20. Not sure what car you have. I went with Michelin Pilot Sport 4S summer tires in 245/40-18 on my 2015 335ix. The handling on curves and comfort on rough roads is absolutely amazing. Could have gone with 245/45-18 if I wanted even more comfort and wheel gap fill. Good luck! Hope this helps! |

I'll post a picture of my winter set once I get some on. Anyone have an idea what discounts Black Friday deal was last year? |
